Why Do People Join Cults?

Are you new to the field of Ufology? Have you been attracted by one fantastic story or another? Or maybe you’ve been experiencing some strange events or phenomenon in your life and you have questions. Before you dive too deeply into this strange, seedy world – I would like to issue all travelers a caution and some advice. The question we’re going to answer today is why do people join cults?

The Nature of Ufology Today

In our recent radio conversation with long-time Ufologist Don Ecker, Don asked me why we started this website. I figured this question may come up, because I get asked it often whenever I introduce someone to our site. We don’t quite fit into the “mold.” We are not a believer forum – we require all claims are backed by solid, verifiable evidence. However, we are not a skeptics forum, because we discuss many issues that knee-jerk skeptics avoid such as spirituality, cryptozoology and many other topics that the “mainstream” might automatically consider “weird.”

Here’ the thing – these topics aren’t actually “weird,” it’s just that so many people that are drawn to these topics are also mentally unstable. This makes it difficult for sane people, like you, to find some respectable and “normal” place to try to find the answers.

The answer that I gave Don surprised him, I think. I quoted him. The quote came from an essay he wrote in 2007, published by Kevin Randle, titled Don Ecker Quits Ufology. In the essay, the most powerful paragraphs expresses the frustration and exhaustion that many respectable researchers and writers throughout Ufology are feeling:

“I’m tired of the media that is blinded by their prejudice about UFOs, their snide and condescending remarks about something that quite frankly they know nothing about. I’m tired of people claiming to be researchers that refuse to accept the truth about something regardless of how many times it jumps up and bites them in the ass.

I’m tired of government agencies that continuously lie about a subject that has shown to be something real and even possibly affect our national security… and getting away with it for over 60 years. I’m tired of believers that become upset when their fuzzy illogic is shown to be as full of holes as Swiss Cheese. I’m tired of frauds and clowns in this field that are shown to be frauds and clowns and yet still are treated like they are stars with something important to say. I suppose you could just say I’m tired of all of it.”

Many of you reading this are probably nodding your heads in agreement. The hoaxes and con games from so many of those mentally unstable individuals lead to a phenomenon known as disinformation overload. Now, overwhelmingly the evidence shows that most of that disinformation comes from con artists who are simply using the field as a platform to gain notoriety or fame, even if on a small scale and within a fringe community.

Oddly, some of the hoaxes also seem to involved small private groups of people as well – people who tend to gravitate to and conduct scientific research on fringe topics. They try to remain under the radar in their efforts – but every now and then you can get a glimpse of one of them on the wings of many of these false stories.

The Creation of Cults

In his examination of the field of Ufology, Jacques Vallee often touches upon this strange phenomenon – that of small groups of individuals forming a cohesive group that shares a collective belief system regarding the phenomenon. Vallee thoroughly explored the question, why do people join cults… For the cohesive group, the belief system doesn’t need to be based in any physical reality or upon any real evidence – it just needs to somehow explain the phenomenon that they’ve all experienced.

Vallee said it best when he wrote in his 1989 book Dimensions:

“I think the stage is set for the appearance of new faiths, centered on the UFO belief. To a greater degree than all phenomena modern science is confronting, the UFO can inspire awe, the sense of the smallness of man, and an idea of the possiblity of contact with the cosmic. The religions we have briefly surveyed began with the miraculous experiences of one person, but to-day there are thousands for whom the belief in otherworldly contact is based on intimate conviction, drawn from what they regard as personal contact with UFOs and their occupants.” (page 192).

This collective belief system makes these groups feel normal, because they share those beliefs. These ideas may include that UFO sightings are caused by extra-terrestrials from other planets, that Intelligence communities across the world have an elaborate system of cover-up of alien visitations, or that aliens are channeling important messages for humanity through contactees or “mediums.”

Whenever a piece of evidence surfaces that runs counter to this group’s “belief-system,” the reaction from cult-members is rather astonishing. Normally kind and mature adults will resort to name-calling. Ordinarily law-abiding citizens will attempt to terrorize or slander anyone involved in revealing that truth.

In Messengers of Deception (a book I will be reviewing here at RU this month), Vallee describes this best:

“Human beings are under the control of a strange force that bends them in absurd ways, forcing them to play a role in a bizarre game of deception.” (p. 20)

Can You Find Answers Within Ufology?

So, why do people join cults? They do so for the very reason you, yourself are reading this blog entry. In fact, you are a perfect candidate for these cults. You have questions about a strange experience you’ve had that feels very real to you. You would like answers that you can’t get from mainstream sources that scorn you for your experiences, or treat you as though you’re crazy. You are certain that you aren’t having delusional visions or any other symptoms of mental illness – so where do you turn?

Well – you would typically end up where the “sick” people (who are actually having delusional visions) end up, on UFO forums that are essentially UFO cults.  You may find a welcoming community that acknowledges your experiences and make you feel as though they are “normal.”  You find a home. This is why people join cults – because they do not realize they’re joining a “cult.”

So what’s the test – how do you know if you’re joining up with a cult community? Well, the best approach I can think of to test a UFO community is to see if they adhere to the sort of “litmus test” that Vallee applied to UFO sightings called the “SVP” code. If the community follows this behavior upon any new report or claim turning up – then you’ve found a winner that you should join – one that is not a UFO cult.

  • Members study the reliability of the source of the story. An anonymous source isn’t given much credit. A person with a known criminal record is given even less. The community automatically filters out stories from such sources.
  • Researchers put “boots on the ground.” Researchers pick up the phone to call sources or visit witnesses and interview them to verify potentially valid claims.
  • Third, do members of the community first try to explain the story or claim with common sense? Do they initially explore natural phenomenon or conventional environmental factors that could explain the phenomena? This behavior isn’t skepticism, it is a healthy way to identify potentially valid paranormal phenomenon through the process of elimination.

All three of these factors were listed in Vallee’s model, rated from 0 to 4.  A “444″ is the gold standard of a truly “impressive” event, or in the case of UFO’s – a sighting that simply can not be explained away.

So, why do people join cults? Because they are looking for answers. If the group that you are considering joining handles new stories or events in the manner described above – that’s the community that you want to join. That’s the community that will help you find the truth, and you don’t have to worry that you may be inadvertently stepping into a UFO cult community.

Lars Hansson Returns…

If you like ground-breaking hoax busting, then you’ve probably heard of Lars C. Hansson, an investigative reporter who, in 1991, produced an over 300 page affidavit completely exposing John Lear and Bill Cooper as complete frauds.

Lars Hansson was a noted researcher and writer into political and U.S. intelligence conspiracy theories, potential cover-ups and of course cleaning up Ufology B.S. He published, “UFO’s, Aliens and “Ex”-intelligence Agents: The Inside Story of John Lear and Bill Cooper-Who’s Fooling Whom”, and then about 15 years ago, Lars simply fell completely and totally off the radar.

Some suspected that he was dead – that finally his earth-shattering research and hoax-busting caught up with him. That is not the case – and tonight at 10:00 PM Pacific, you can hear from Lars Hansson himself as he talks with our very good friend and fellow investigative researcher, Don Ecker – the host of the Dark Matters radio show.

Don Ecker writes in the RU Forums:

“… Lars dropped off the radar, seemingly forever, over 15 years ago. I knew him very well back in the early 90’s and some of the stories we shared included but were not limited to …. John Lear, Bill Cooper, Bob Lazar, Gordon Novel, Col. Bo Gritz, and too many others than to name now.

There were even those who believed he was dead because of the book he wrote titled; “UFO’s, Aliens and “Ex”-intelligence Agents: The Inside Story of John Lear and Bill Cooper-Who’s Fooling Whom” (for more on that and to read what is online go to http://www.ufomind.com/area51/people/lear/hansson.html)

A short while ago he contacted me out of the blue and after we spent hours on the telephone catching up, he agreed to come on Dark Matters Radio tonight (June 17th) for the first in a series of shows to not only catch up but find out what he was been doing for the last 15 years.”

This is a remarkable story and should make for a fascinating radio show, as another one of Ufology’s greatest hoax-busters rises up and reports that he is, in fact, very much alive and well. You can even call in at 1-818-381-4094 during the show and ask Lars a question yourself.

Listen to the show tonight at 10pm (Pacific time) on CyberstationUSA (click on “Listen Live”).

After the show, visit Don in the forums and let him know what you thought about the show!

Don Ecker Interviews Stephen Broadbent on Dark Matters Radio

After RealityUncovered released the story about “Source A” and his true identity, the response throughout the Ufology community has, excluding the Exopolitics crowd, been very positive.

Those revelations about Source A continue to reverberate throughout the Ufology community this week, as discussions take place on the many Ufology forums and blogs regarding Richard Theilmann and the Pickering Brothers.

Today, well-known Ufologist Don Ecker contacted us for an interview with RU’s Stephen Broadbent to discuss this hoax as well as the other stories RU has published since its founding.

The radio interview will be aired tonight at 10pm Pacific Time, 1am Eastern Time. You can listen to the live show at CyberstationUSA, or download the show from the archive at Dark Matters Radio.

About Don Ecker

For anyone familiar with the field of Ufology, Don Ecker is a well known figure, and we were very pleased to have this opportunity for a dialog with such an established figure in the field. Don Ecker served as the Director of Research for UFO Magazine for more than 20 years.

In terms of military background, Richard, Clay and Shawn could learn a thing or two from reviewing Don’s past. This is a man with a real military background. Don enlisted in the army in 1969 and served in the top-secret Army Security Agency (the military branch of the NSA) during the Vietnam War. Don served at Okinawa and served in Vietnam at Camp A-4 in Phu Bai in 1971, right on the DMZ. Don was injured during the 1972 “Easter Offensive,” receiving a Purple Heart, and was eventually honorably discharged from service.

In this author’s humble opinion, there is no one better suited to interview RU’s Stephen Broadbent than Don Ecker

Don’s Past UFO Research Aligns with RU’s Mission

In this interview, Don and Steve immediately strike up a positive camaraderie. This could be because both Don and Steve share a military background. Or, just as likely, it could be because they share a common research style – open minded, yet skeptical and fair.

In the early 1980’s, during his work as a police criminal investigator, Don investigated cattle mutilation cases, which eventually led to his life-long interest in various legends and myths.

Don is an established international Ufology expert, making appearances at UFO conferences across the world. He has hosted numerous radio programs and eventually established Dark Matters on Reality Radio Network with film star Dwight Schultz (The A-Team and Star Trek). Don Ecker has been featured on the History channel, the Discovery channel and Coast to Coast AM, to name a few.

Interview Topics

In tonight’s interview, Don and Steve’s discussion is an in-depth talk about the Source A expose, developed from the original, amazing investigative efforts of researchers Andrew and John and then developed and published as a collaborative effort between Amkon and RealityUncovered.

After striking up an interesting discussion, the topics in this radio show also branch out into other areas as well, including RU’s past Serpo investigations, the Phoenix Lights, the Kennedy Assasination and even 9-11.

So listen to the radio show live tonight at CyberstationUSA. Or, if you miss it, make sure to check it out at the archives at Dark Matters Radio

The Ernie Kellerstrauss UFO and MJ12 Drama

wpafbHave you heard of the Kellerstrauss UFO story yet? When most people think of the MJ12 documents, they think of Bill Moore, Jamie Shandera, Rick Doty and the other characters circulated throughout the Internet in the form of Ufology urban legends and of course the Aviary mythology. Surprisingly, despite countless examples revealing why the documents are fraudulent – one example Steve described in detail in an earlier article on the Truman signature, the MJ-12 cult led by Dr. Robert Wood and Ryan Wood forges ahead with their close minded and steadfast belief in the authenticity of the documents.

Where Does the Kellerstrauss UFO Connection Fit In?

So you might be wondering about Ernie Kellerstrass and the Kellerstrauss UFO link. Robert Collins was actually the first person to publicly name Ernie Kellerstrauss in his UFO book Exempt from Disclosure. So, the name is not yet high on the radar for many Ufologists, and the majority of researchers haven’t made many of the connections between what Collins allowed to slip out in his book, and the events that went on from the 1970s through today.

We first brought some of those connections to light in the RU article Bruce Maccabee Interviews Ernie “Hawk” Kellerstrass. In 2005, Maccabee released the content of a series of interviews that took place from 1985 through 1986 between himself and Ernie Kellerstrass. In those interviews, which took place before the public release of the MJ12 documents, Ernie described the following topics to Bruce.

(1) A secret book containing information about “EBE”, multiple alien races
(2) Early history from 10,000 years ago to the time of Christ
(3) Captured Alien Craft and Bodies/Prisoners
(4) Aliens as vegetarians
(5) Their star-system having a double-star, or double-sun.

Now, Ernie made reference to this information as coming from Dale Graff. At the time of the alleged Dale Graff/Ernie Kellerstrass conversations, 1979, Dale Graff was actively involved in a Top Secret government project that is now publicly revealed – the government’s remote viewing research. Ernie was Dale’s acting Supervisor at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This is a strange coincidence considering the number of former remote viewing characters who became involved and events that took place after the 1985 Maccabee interview.

Regardless who came up with the information, Ernie or Dale, the fact is that Ernie publicly revealed this information almost the same exact year that shadowy characters started forcing the public distribution of the MJ12 documents upon the Ufology community.

Amazingly, the MJ12 documents contained the exact same topics that Ernie had previously discussed in his interview with Bruce Maccabee.

So What Does It All Mean?

Is there even any Ernie Kellerstrauss UFO connection to the government at all, or are these memes simply the fabrication of one or two delusional minds? Did they see things during their work on Top Secret projects that they misinterpreted and later analyzed as relating to Aliens? Or were the projects actually related to the study of aliens and UFO’s?

In another previous article, we mentioned how Ingo Swann once allegedly remote viewed a UFO (according to the old remote viewing urban legends). Could these fabricated documents have been related to similar RV sessions? Or were the MJ12 docs an attempt by a group of believers to extract a reaction from a government that they believed was covering up inside information relating to UFOs.

If anyone is familiar with the closing of Project Blue Book – there were a lot of angry folks that felt the project shut-down was premature and unwarranted. Were there enough angry individuals to form a new group that would go on the offensive against a government they believed was attempting to keep the truth from the public?

There are a few things that are now known for certain regarding the origins of the MJ12 documents, and the origins of the “Aviary” group in those initial years of the 1980s. We know that many of Ernie Kellerstrass’ UFO ideas, were part of a discussion of these matters between himself and Dale Graff in the late 1970s, long before the ideas ever went public. We also know that an initiative built up steam from the mid-1970s through the mid 1980s to mount some kind of operation either against Ufology, against the U.S. government, or both.

Furthermore, we know that this group, while they are dispersed throughout the country and each have different UFO/Alien beliefs of their own that extend beyond the Kellerstrauss UFO theories, and the members of that group still maintain their collective efforts to distribute this material, at least as late as 2005.

There are patterns and connections now floating throughout the public domain relating to the motives and activities of this group. Bob Collins book was an attempt by a believer to disclose the reality about Aliens and UFOs, however the true reality is that it served as a massive security breach in the secrecy and privacy this private group has enjoyed for many decades.

The Strange World of Back Engineered UFO Technology

darpa1 The world of reverse engineering is indeed a strange one. It’s a landscape of claims and counter claims. Fantastic stories and skeptical analysis. The characters are legendary and the truth elusive. One constant is the proposition that DARPA may be the agency responsible for any advances in the technology.  While DARPA does have a hand in a lot of advances in technology, they only push projects forward - they don’t do the work. As noted by Nicholas Evans in Military Gadgets 2004 "airplane, tank, radar, jet engine, helicopter, electronic computer, stealth technology and internet, none of these that transformed warfare in the 20 and 21st century owed their initial development to the military but were accelerated into service by DARPA." And they work with a limited budget.

A quick look at the DOD fiscal 2003 budget report shows the research budget for DARPA for 2001-2003 at a little less than 3 billion per year. NASA had a 15 billion per year operating budget of which the shuttle takes a third. The NRO was 6 billion per year(An Introduction to Planetary Defense, 2006, Taylor & Boan).

Robert Lazar and Element 115

Back to the characters. In 1987, Robert Lazar shocked the world when he went on television claiming to have been part of an operation that worked on alien technology. Lazar said that the government has possession of at least nine alien spacecraft at a base called S-4. He claimed EG&G hired him to help reverse engineer the technology in the alien craft for use in U.S. military vehicles and power production. In the process, he discovered a rusty, heavy substance he called "Element 115" that powered the alien spacecraft.

Lazar explained how the atomic element 115 (or ununpentium (Uup)) served as a nuclear fuel for the propulsion of the alien craft. Element 115 provided an energy source which would produce anti-gravity under particulate bombardment. As the intense strong nuclear force field of element 115’s nucleus was properly amplified, the resulting effect would be a distortion of the surrounding gravitational field. A vehicle producing this distortion could alter its own relation to the space around it, allowing it to dramatically shorten the distance between itself and its destination.

Lazar speculated that element 115’s probable absence on Earth was due to the fact that the supernovae in Earth’s region of the galaxy were insufficiently massive to produce nuclei of this density. He postulates that other parts of the universe could be richer in this element.  Lazar indicated stocks of the element 115 were a gift from an off-planet civilization to be used as fuel for our own spacecraft.

In 2004, a team of American and Russian scientists succeeded in producing element 115 as an unstable isotope, confirming the existence of such an atom, however the real isotope has virtually none of the critical qualities Lazar describes.

Ultimately, there is no evidence to support Lazar’s claims. Even Stanton Freidman, usually a Ufology proponent of such stories, debunked Lazar – revealing how Lazar’s claim that he holds Masters degrees from CalTech and MIT is false because there’s no evidence he ever even attended either University.  Multiple academic Physicists and Engineers reviewed the alleged propulsion system described by Robert Lazar and found it to be bogus. Two examples are Professor of Engineering George D. Hathaway’s analysis , and a Physical Review by Edward Halereqicz in 2008 where he writes, "Overall, it is revealed that a great number of Lazar’s ’scientific explanations’ are critically flawed."

Philip Corso and Alien Technology

In 1997 Philip Corso shook the UFO community with his book The Day After Roswell (co-author William J. Birnes) relating how he stewarded extraterrestrial artifacts recovered from a crash at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. According to Corso, a covert government group was assembled under the leadership of the first Director of Central Intelligence, Adm. Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter (see Majestic 12). Among its tasks was to collect all information on off-planet technology.

Corso also claimed the reverse engineering of these artifacts indirectly led to the development of accelerated particle beam devices, fiber optics, lasers, integrated circuit chips and Kevlar material. He also said the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), or "Star Wars", was meant to achieve the destructive capacity of electronic guidance systems of incoming enemy warheads, as well as the disablement of enemy spacecraft, including those from extraterrestrial origin.

Corso claimed that different parts of the Roswell craft were sent to various defense companies, who reverse engineered their properties and that this engineering feat eventually led to a number of breakthroughs. Among them were integrated circuitry, night vision equipment, the laser, particle beams, and fibre optics. These claims have not been independently verified (in fact, the real history of the development of many of these technologies do not support his claims) and the according to Corso, contractors reverse engineering the technologies were told that the parts were stolen from Russia.

In the end, Corso’s stories also turned out to be riddled with holes and outright untruths. An article in the Klass Files reports a litany of holes, including the following:

"On page 197, Corso–who served as a commander of an Army anti-aircraft missile contingent in Germany–says that the Army’s Hawk anti-aircraft weapon is a "heat-seeking missile" for its terminal guidance. The Hawk is a radar-guided missile. The book claims that "the American public first heard about the existence of Stealth [aircraft] technology in President Jimmy Carter’s campaign against President Ford in 1976." The first limited disclosure of the new B-2 stealth bomber did not come until four years later during the Carter-Reagan campaign."

In Tom Mahood’s review of Corso’s book, he writes:

"He’s certainly had a pretty decent career, so why sully it with this UFO
biz?  Much of what he writes is checkable (and what I’ve checked comes
up lacking), so if he’s making it up he’s gotta know he’s going down.
Is it some sort of "disinformation"?  Many will say it is, but I don’t
know.  Honestly, I’m not completely sure just what to make of it.  I
know it’s not the truth, that he’s likley a loon, but beyond that…."

Richard Boylan and Antigravity Technology

Next up is Richard Boylan, who says "At this time, I am aware of the existence of ten kinds of special-technology advanced aerospace platforms [mil-speak for craft], all incorporating antigravity technology in some form."

Those ten were: the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber, the Aurora Lockheed-Martin’s X-33A, Boeing and Airbus Industries’ Nautilus, the TR3-A Pumpkinseed, the TR3-B Triangle, Northrop’s Great Pumpkin disc, Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical’s XH-75D, Shark antigravity helicopter, and Lockheed-Martin and Northrop’s jointly-developed TAW-50 hypersonic antigravity fighter-bomber.

The TR3-B Craft – Anti-Gravity? Not Quite – Boylan Gets It Wrong

Of those craft listed by Boylan, the most fantastic and relevant to the field of UFOlogy is the TR3-B ’Astra", which is allegedly a large triangular anti-gravity craft within the U.S. fleet. The alleged "TR3-B" is the claimed code name for what witnesses have seen – the very large triangular-shaped re-entry vehicle "with anti-gravity." It’s what the November [2000] issue of Popular Mechanics identified as the Lenticular Reentry Vehicle, a nuclear-powered flying saucer - the first version of which allegedly went operational in 1962, [the version which Popular Mechanics illustrated.] Black projects defense industry alleged insider Edgar Rothschild Fouche wrote about the existence of the TR3-B in his book, Alien Rapture . He claimed an anonymous ex-NSA informant, ’Z’, also confirmed that the TR3-B is operational. Fouche claimed that the TR-3B generates an intense magnetic field that reduces its weight by 89 percent.

He says that the TR-3B does not have an antigravity propulsion system, but merely uses the Biefeld-Brown effect to reduce its weight so that more conventional propulsion systems such as scramjets can give it amazing speed.

However, others point out that the effect has been attributed to ionic wind and has been shown to not work in a vacuum, thus eliminating any alleged “antigravity” effects.

"Self-Healing" Materials

Another compelling real-world technology that is often utilized in the telling of alien reverse-engineering tales is the field of morphing metals. Take this quote by Anna McGowan, program manager at NASA’s Langley Research Centre (LaRC), "This is technology that most people aren’t aware even exists."

The team working on the Morphing Project at LaRC have been testing materials with highly unusual properties. These include materials which have the ability to bend on command, ‘sense’ pressure, transform from liquid to solid when placed in a magnetic field and shape-memory polymers. The primary shape memory materials in use are alloys like Nitinol, which have the stiffness of steel but can return to its previous shape when heat is applied, the original shape having been ‘trained’ into the alloy.

Perhaps more incredibly, the Science team have been working on ‘intrinsically smart’ materials which can perform self-diagnosis and self-repair. By understanding the characteristics of these materials at the molecular level, ‘designer smart’ materials will be developed for future application in a number of fields - not the least aerospace - where we might see the development of distributed self-assessment throughout the wings and body of craft with self-repair properties.

The ‘self-healing’ materials are human-made (not alien made) of long-chain molecules called ionomers which react to penetration, such as a bullet, by closing behind it. The implications of this technology for space flight are tremendous.

The new shape-changing process is based on a flat sheet of beryllium copper alloy. Stress within it is manipulated using forming tools to bend, coil or twist the material.

"Imagine seeing a bullet shot through a sheet of material, only to have the material instantly "heal" behind the bullet! Remember, this is not science fiction. Self-healing materials actually exist, and LaRC scientists are working to unravel their secrets.

What we did at NASA-Langley was basically dissect that material to answer the question, ‘how does it do that?’" McGowan said. "By doing so, we can actually get down to computational modeling of these materials at the molecular level. Once we understand the material’s behavior at that level, then we can create designer ’smart’ materials."

Final Words

It seems clear that the technology that’s referenced in these tales are not part of any sort of "reverse engineering" efforts, but instead they are simply fanciful tales. Does DARPA have a hand in any of this? Philip Corso, Robert Lazar and Richard Boylan have all made attempts at convincing followers of Ufology that our latest technologies do, in fact, come from the stars – despite the fact that each of these technologies have verified histories (and actual human inventors) that prove otherwise.  Do these fraudulent stories mean that we should disbelieve all stories related to the existence of odd flying triangles in our skies? I’ve personally seen one fly right over my head – and seeing is believing.

There is no fast, hard evidence to support any of these reverse engineering tales, but what the stories do generate are more questions than answers – that is, questions about the creators of these tales and their motives for doing so.

The Bad Shepherd

The Bad Shepherd

James Jesus Angleton is widely known as the long-serving Associate Deputy Director of Operations for Counter-Intelligence at the CIA. The 2006 spy movie “The Good Shepherd” was loosely based on his career as the agency’s premier spy catcher, as were several other films and novels, most notably the 2007 three-part miniseries “The Company” starring Michael Keaton.

Nicknamed “Kingfisher”, James Jesus Angleton was forced to resign from the CIA in 1975 after nearly twenty-five years service[1]. He died fourteen years later in 1987, aged 69.

What is not so widely known is that certain authors have used James Jesus Angleton’s name to bolster claims of a huge government cover-up regarding crashed flying saucers and a super secret government cabal known as Majestic-12.

One such writer is Captain Robert “Bob” Collins, co-author of the self-published book Exempt from Disclosure,[2] first released in 2005.  In the book, Collins claims that he has been in regular contact with the Miami grandson of James Jesus Angleton, who provided him with many of his grandfather’s personal notes that were allegedly taken during classified CIA briefings.

“James Angleton Jr., Miami, FL, has been providing us with much needed support over the last few years.  Many of the conversations have centered on his grandfather’s personal notes which number in the thousands of pages according to Jim.[3]

Tim Cooper further reinforced the source of these notes from a 45-minute phone conversation with Angleton Jr. in March 2000.

“He is holding his granddad’s papers, which his father gave him for safekeeping and some Dulles files which Angleton took from CIA headquarters.[4]

The content of these alleged notes range from the sublime to the ridiculous. The first mention of the information contained therein concerns a top-secret government experiment involving teleportation:

“As a further concluding remark to this chapter, both Tim Cooper’s father MSgt Harry B Cooper, now deceased and Jim Angleton’s grandfather (James Jesus Angleton, Section 2, Chapter 1), also deceased in 1987, have both described early government work involving teleportation experiments. One such set of experiments was said to have taken place at Wright-Patterson AFB in early 60s. Needless to say, those early experiments ended up in disaster where solid innate matter was turned inside out as did the animals they used in the experiments. Jim Angleton’s grandfather James Jesus who is mentioned above related the following with Jim reading from his CIA notes. Angleton writes: The first transport blew up a rat. It literally blew up into pieces. A visitor (Alien) helped them tweak the dimensions to send the rate from point “a” to point “b.” But as of 1979, they had not been able to make a rat move. However, in the ’90s, they were successful in moving water from point “a” to point “b.”[5]

The Sublime Albert Einstein

The Sublime

It is interesting that the information above mirrors almost exactly a scene in the 1999 movie, “Galaxy Quest”. In it, a pig-rat thing is transported aboard a spaceship and is turned inside out and exploded before the inexperienced operator ran the transporter properly. Coincidence? We think not, especially when one considers that the rewriting of “real” information (i.e. the script of a movie in this case) in order to fit with the fantasies as displayed in Collins’ book and other, similar venues is par for the course for the scammers. Another notable example is provided in the very next section below.

Angleton Jr. provided the following information to Collins and several others, allegedly taken directly from the personal notes of Albert Einstein in 1952 and formerly in the possession of his late grandfather, but with their actual origins much closer in time.

The Ridiculous

“The qualitative picture is a local field of positive cosmological constants contributing to the local metric field in a small boundary layer around the skin of the craft. The layer was controlled by the EM brainwave of the pilot. The pilot also has a Q* type of field. Dr. Einstein expanded… The fuselage of the craft was more liken to a high temperature super-conductor to which the occupants do not feel the g forces at high accelerations or sharp turns. There is a direct correlation to mind-linkage via headband and hand-panels. There is an exotic field surrounding the vehicle. The hull had super-conducting properties[6]

“We watched the craft displace gravity via propagation by a magnetic wave (3). It resonated at first, ALF (Alien Life Form) our liaison, telepathically explained its basic propulsion stating that N in the equation (not shown) is the number of pairs in the super-conductor (these electron pairs contribute to the anti-gravity effect)…with a slowly changing component and frequency for the EM field.[7]

Bob Collins comes close to recognizing the probable true source for the above quote in the very next paragraph. He writes:

“This scene seems to be depicted in the 1951 movie, ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ (4) where in this case the scientist is Albert Einstein and the alien is ALF[8]“.

As we will see in the next section, Bob Collins himself is convinced the person he has been speaking to since at least February 2001 and probably earlier is the bona-fide grandson of the late James Jesus Angleton. It is little wonder why. Having the apparent endorsement of such a high profile figure -albeit twice removed- does wonders for your credibility and perhaps lessens the need to do a little fact checking.

The information that has been attributed to James Jesus Angleton is both startling and worrying at the same time. Startling because the information itself is fantastical in nature, and worrying because of the apparent disregard of national security in leaving allegedly classified information laying around in a large collection of notes to be published at will by anyone who sees fit. This flies in the face of what we know about the real James Jesus Angleton, spymaster extraordinaire.

With this in mind, we at Reality Uncovered decided to do a little fact checking of our own.

Will the real Angleton family please stand up.

The goal of our investigation couldn’t be simpler; Verify or disprove the existence of the grandson of the late James Jesus Angleton, said to be a living in Florida, Miami. What better way to start than to go straight to the source, i.e. the known family of James Jesus Angleton as documented in his obituary, printed in the New York Times of May 12, 1987[9].

Excerpt:
“Mr. Angleton is survived by his wife, Cicely d’Autremont; a son, James Charles Angleton, of Los Angeles, and two daughters, Guru Sangat Kaur[10], of Great Falls, Va., and Lucy d’Autremont Angleton, of New Mexico. He also leaves a brother, Hugh Angleton of Boise, and two sisters, Carmen Mercedes Angleton of Rome and Delores Guarnieri of Florence, Italy.”

With the above information in hand, Reality Uncovered researcher “Wormwood” conducted a thorough genealogical search and found the contact details for all of the immediate family of James Jesus Angleton listed in his obituary. Reality Uncovered co-administrator “Access Denied” was volunteered to make contact with the family, and a few days later spoke with Lucy Angleton, daughter of James Jesus Angleton, on the telephone.

Lucy confirmed to Access Denied that James Jesus Angleton didn’t have any grandchildren living in Florida, nor did he have any grandchildren by the name of James Angleton Jr., James Jesus Angleton Jr., James Angleton III or any other derivative of the name. Lucy also kindly put Access Denied in touch with another member of the family, a person related to one of her uncle’s, who confirmed the exact same thing.

We now knew for sure that the information attributed to James Jesus Angleton must be bogus, so we set about finding out who the mysterious “grandson” really is.

We already knew from Bob Collins’ statements in Exempt from Disclosure that James Jesus Angleton Jr. was alleged to be a banker working in Miami, Florida. This same information was told to us by Dr. Christopher “Kit” Green via email in response to questions by Ryan Dube of Reality Uncovered, and was also confirmed in an email exchange between the authors of this article and Jack Sarfatti, by way of Jack Sarfatti’s email discussion list.

Extract from Kit Green email of January 20, 2007:

“I have no idea what Collins means by the whole Angleton thing with the emails, address differences, and Broadbent. I had no idea that Steve was in touch with the Grandson. But, if it is the real Grandson, he could probably trust the man…the stories about what he found in his grandfather’s diaries are things I have only heard third hand. I do know:

1. Collins is in touch, or was, with Angleton’s real grandson…the Vice President of the Bank in Florida. The same guy with the stories about what his grandfather and father told him, and the diaries.

2. That guy was also in touch with me, over a year ago, about a serious medical condition in his family. In that discussion he referred to his Grandfather often  (who I knew, but not well)…but never about the UFO and alien stuff. He also was in touch for a while with Hal, and Gordon, and others. What they forwarded to me from him about the Soap Opera (never a part of my discussions with him) was somewhat as tough to believe as some of the most sane of John Lear’s statements. So, for a while at least…Collins was in touch with the right guy.

3. He had a falling-out with Collins over what Collins put in his book:

he was furious. It was not that it was not true, and not that it wasn’t what he had said…but the same as others have had problems with. Bob and sworn secrecy and privacy…and broke the rules. I saw those emails.

At that time, he broke off all contacts with Collins. I have no clue if he is back in touch or not. Or, if in touch, with the same and the real guy…”

Extract from email to Jack Sarfatti’s discussion group by Jack Sarfatti, January 3, 2007:

“For the record I never saw or had in my possession any official military record of Robert Collins. I never saw his DD-214. My information is based on e-mail hearsay from at least one reliable source. Be that as it may. Exempt from Disclosure has some interesting details including the connection to James Jesus Angleton JJA. I can confirm now that indeed it is almost certain that JJA’s grandson JA Jr has been running RMC [Robert M.Collins] in a significant way. JA Jr was and may still be a Sr VP Hemisphere Bank in Miami and is head of Former Intelligence Officer’s Association Chapter in Miami…”

Using this information, it was a simple task to locate the email address and contact details for the James Angleton Jr. person alleged to be the grandson of JJA. His name and the corresponding bank email address was found on the website of the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers (AFIO/see Appendix A)[11], later renamed to the Ted Shackley Chapter of the AFIO. The email address, James.Angleton@hnbus.com, confirmed the bank was indeed the Hemisphere National Bank[12] as mentioned by Jack Sarfatti in the email above. Hemisphere National changed its name to Republic Federal in early 2007[13], with James Angleton’s email address, James.Angleton@Federalrepublic.com, also changing on the AFIO website to reflect the change. We also discovered another email address used by Angleton, namely Jim_Angleton@msn.com, which is present on his personal biography (see Appendix B) in an application[14] posted by the City of Miami and therefore a public record. Later, Collins confirmed both email accounts as being grandson Angleton Jr.’s.

Back in early 2007, we discovered for ourselves that the James Angleton Jr. who was in contact with Bob Collins was indeed the same James Angleton Jr. who worked at the bank. A highly-charged discussion was taking place on Jack Sarfatti’s email discussion list concerning the distribution of plagiarized notes by Angleton Jr. which wound up in Exempt from Disclosure. I wrote to Angleton using the Hemisphere National Bank email address on February 12, 2007. He replied just a short time later:

“Dear Mr. Broadbent,

Thank you for introducing yourself. This email address is strictly used for business purposes. I am not interested in this topic and yes, some out there use my last name. Please do not forward their gossip. I hope you will understand the true spirit of this final communication for privacy as it is intended. All the best, Jim.”

I replied one more time by asking him if he had a different email address he could use, to which he responded:

“If you are referring to bantering by Dr. Sarfatti and Robert Collins, I have knowledge of their conduct. Other than this, the internet is full of frauds, wanna-be’s and crazies. For this reason is why I really do not reply back and refer it to my security department.  Do you feel my life is in danger?”

Less than a day later, on February 13th, Bob Collins sent this short one line email to the main discussion list:

“Broadbent, JA Jr turned you off politely didn’t he? Please learn…..Rmc”

My email to James Angleton was sent to him only and to no one else. The fact that Collins knew Angleton had “turned me off politely” proved beyond any doubt they were in contact with each other.

To be on the safe side, I emailed Collins on May 30, 2009 and asked him some specific questions related to his Angleton contact:

Stephen Broadbent wrote: [to Collins]

Thanks for being so patient with me.
When you have contacted Angleton in Florida, have you used the
bank email address or only the msn email address? Have you spoken
to him on the telephone at the bank, or only at home? Did you
have any contact with Junior’s father who died in 2004?

Thanks again,
Steve

Collins wrote: [to Broadbent]:
All of that

This email response confirms critical information. The Angleton Jr. that he is in contact with uses both the bank and msn.com email addresses, he has spoken to him both at work and home and furthermore confirms that Junior’s father died in 2004, information that would be essential in uncovering the true family history.

To the casual observer however, it appeared the Florida James Angleton was who he alleged to be. The link to the Association of Former Intelligence Officers is a massive clincher for most people and that he also appears to be a respectable banker only serves to cement that. Upon hearing that James Angleton was actually not who he was alleged to be, Jack Sarfatti found it extremely difficult to believe based on the AFIO link alone:

Fri 01/05/2009 00:53

how do you explain this?

http://www.geocities.com/afiomdc/ci.html

We will come to the AFIO information shortly. A search at the Republic Federal Bank website confirms the man is indeed named James Angleton Jr. and also reveals that he is the Senior Vice President of Real Estate[15]. This of course rules out the possibility of someone by another name simply using the Angleton name for there own purposes. Or so it would appear.

Bob Collins, as we already know, was another, who was utterly convinced based on flimsy evidence, as the email exchange below will illustrate. He had earlier asked me “how could someone with no technical background just make that stuff up?”

Broadbent email to Collins dated April 21, 2009:

I agree with you about the technical background. That is of course assuming he didn’t have help preparing those notes – from someone with a technical background.

The next question may seem strange at first glance, but who was it, who told you, that Angleton was JJA’s grandson?

Collins’ reply dated Tue April 21, 2009 17:07:

Stop making things up. You make no sense, the guy[s] a Banker, there would be no purpose as a Banker to make things up or get a tech person to help him, then that tech person would have to know something about super conductors, this is beginning to sound crazy. As for grandson look it up, it’s all over the Internet….do the research…..Rmc

Having already learned the Angleton family had no such relation in Florida, we went trawling through the paper trail in order to prove it once and for all. I believe the term for this is known as “Doing the research”.

Just who is the Fake Angleton?

In order to trace the Florida Angleton family tree, we needed as many details as possible in order to make the search both accurate and less time consuming. Fortunately for us, we had RU researcher “Wormwood” on our side.

Searches on the internet turned up two obituaries [Appendix C & D] for the father of James Angleton Jr., which ties in with what we already knew: He died in 2004 of a brain tumor, as confirmed by several people and reported in several locations, but most notably by Bob Collins in the email exchange dated April 30, 2009 quoted further above.

The February-March, 2007: “Showdown”, posting of Dan Smith’s Blog briefly mentions the same thing:

“JA1 died in 1987.  JA2 developed a brain tumor in ‘01 and died in ‘04.”[16]

There was also another reference by Kit Green to Angleton Jr. in another email to Broadbent about Angleton Sr.’s illness:

” I exchanged a couple of emails once, with the grandson…never
met, and never even talked on the phone…but we never
discussed a thing about the Grand-dad. It was all because he needed some
information about progression of brain tumours. He was only
interested in me and me with him for NeuroRadiological
reasons…never a snippet about UFO’s or anything like that.”[17]

Having located the obituaries for Angleton Sr., we now had the dates we needed in order to untangle the mysterious web that had been woven in Florida.

As with any good story it has a beginning. As far as we can determine it started in 1989 with James Angleton Sr.’s claim of being the nephew of James Jesus Angleton in the Miami Herald article ANGLETON‘S OFTEN CONFUSED WITH EX-CIA CHIEF UNCLE [18] (see Appendix E). This was a strange find. We expected to see claims of him being the son of James Jesus Angleton, for Junior to be the grandson or no claims at all, but nephew? Research of public records into the Angletons who live in the Miami area, located the James Angleton Sr. referenced by this article. It also showed him as having a son named James Angleton Jr., thus proving the link between the two. It’s clear the reference in the Miami Herald is to Angleton Sr. due to his age as the article states he was an interpreter during the Korean War and the reference to his involvement as president of the Biscayne Boulevard Chamber of Commerce points directly to Angleton Sr. as per his obit (see Appendix C & D). However, the reference in Exempt from Disclosure states, its Angleton Jr., a Miami grandson, while the article refers to Angleton Sr. as a nephew not a grandson.

In addition to this, genealogy records on Ancestry.com by various families related to the real James Jesus Angleton eg. Mason, Alexander, Snodgrass, etc. and other public records do not support the Junior Angleton’s claim of being the grandson of James Jesus Angleton, nor does it support his father being the son of or even the nephew of James Jesus Angleton.

Early in 2001, Collins too appears to be in a state of confusion, labelling JJA Jr. as the son of JJA.

From: “Dr. J. Cesare Sarfatti”
To: Robert Collins
Subject: Re: James Angleton Sr’s alleged CIA notes on Jack Sarfatti
Date: Sat, Feb 17, 2001, 6:26 PM
Robert Collins wrote:

“Jack S; remember that last email and that “guy” doing “Gilbert and
Sullivan” tricks ? Well, he thought same of your answer…That “guy” happens
to be JJA jr or the son of JJA see http://home.sprintmail.com/~rigoletto/reports/tim_james_angleton.html “[19]

Of course, this seems to indicate that Collins was speaking with the Angleton Sr. (son of JJA) not Angleton Jr. and Collins is using the same initials for all three of them. Others also noted this incongruence. Later Collins apparently straightened it out to James Angleton Sr. and James Angleton Jr. as son and grandson of James Jesus Angleton.

As already noted, James Angleton Sr. passed away in 2004 with two obituaries being written. Again, in the obituaries we see references that match Olympia Ross’ clip ANGLETONS OFTEN CONFUSED WITH EX-CIA CHIEF UNCLE. Namely, Angleton Sr. was part of a “governmental intelligence agency for over 20 years”, president of the Biscayne Boulevard Chamber of Commerce and served in the air force during the Korean War.

Now we can deal with Angleton Sr.’s claim of being the nephew of James Jesus Angleton. We already know the James Jesus Angleton family has denied any relationship, but let’s further show how unlikely the relationship of Angleton Sr. being the son of James Jesus Angleton’s brother as stated in the Miami Herald.

James Angleton Sr. (DOB: 1932) was a native of New Jersey according to his obit (see Appendix C). His obit also lists Henry (DOB: abt 1929) and Eddie [Edward] Angelo (DOB: abt 1933) as his brothers. This adds another layer of confusion as the two brothers have a different last name. James was the middle child, thus Eddie couldn’t be from an earlier marriage. They all appear to be members of the Greek Orthodox Church. Certainly, James Angleton Sr. was deeply involved in the Greek Orthodox Church according to the obituaries.

Yet, the real James Jesus Angleton’s family were a Catholic family. James Jesus Angleton’s father, James Hugh Angleton, was born in Illinois. James Jesus Angleton’s mother, Carmen, was born in Mexico. They lived in Italy when the father, James Hugh Angleton, worked for the National Cash Register. The family has no Greek background whatsoever, nor are they in any way Greek Orthodox and there no records showing that James Jesus Angleton’s family ever even lived in New Jersey. The same applies to his brother Hugh Rolla Angleton.  James Hugh Angleton and his wife raised their first two children, sons, in Idaho, and that was also where the third child, Carmen, was born. In 1927, they moved to Dayton, Ohio where their fourth child, Delores, was born. Finally in December 1933, the family moved to Milan, Italy when James Hugh Angleton’s position changed within NCR[20].

Now simple arithmetic comes into play. Not only does the claim by James Angleton Sr. that he is the nephew of James Jesus Angleton not have any support as far as public records and other references show, but a comparison of birth dates reveals an unavoidable fact. Not only did James Hugh and Carmen’s, second child, Hugh Rolla (DOB: June 1920), not have a son named James Angleton, but also Hugh Rolla would have only been eleven (11) years old at the time of Angleton Sr’s birth. Any other siblings would be even younger. Furthermore, James Jesus (DOB: 9 Dec 1917), himself, would have been only fourteen (14) years old when Angleton Sr. was born – not to mention he would have been only thirteen (13) years old when Angleton Sr. was conceived! Any claims by Angleton Sr. that he is the son or nephew of James Jesus Angleton just don’t hold up. As Angleton Sr.’s house of cards falls, so do the claims attributed to his son Angleton Jr.

James Jesus Angleton, James Angleton Sr. and James Angleton Jr.

Spot the odd one out!
From left to right: James Jesus Angleton[21], James Angleton Sr[22]., James Angleton Jr[23].

Still we are not done, during this investigation attempts were made to contact the Angleton Sr. Family in Florida. Unable to get in touch with Penelope (Penny) Kays Angleton, Angleton Sr.’s widow and Angleton Jr.’s mother, we found contact had been made by another researcher with one of the other family members. Unfortunately, the family member balked at explaining why Angleton Sr. had a different last name than his brothers, but did verify that James Angleton Sr. indeed had two brothers named Edward and Henry Angelo. Public records also show that the oldest brother also has an alias of Henry Angelo I and Henry Angelo III (this may be Henry’s son), which is another familiar touch as grandson Angleton has also been known as Angleton III.

With these additional pieces of information, we gained Angleton Sr.’s marriage certificate by looking through the Florida marriage records available on Ancestry.com. For 1954/55 we find the following record:

James Angelo married Penelope Kays in 1955 Dade county, Volume 1527,  Certificate #2599.

We have a match. Penelope Kays is Penny Angleton’s maiden name and Angelo is the same surname as his two brothers, Henry and Eddie. James Angleton Sr. isn’t even an Angleton! Now who was the Angleton Sr.’s father?  Checking New Jersey 1930 census records for an Angelo with only one child at that time named Henry born abt 1929 we find only one record, in Warwick, Orange, New York, with parents named as being Henry and Mary Angelo. Henry Angelo was from Greece.

The final nail was fast approaching. We now know sometime after Angleton Sr.’s marriage and prior to 1973 James Angelo changed his and his family’s name to Angleton. It’s still a mystery as to why, with the best speculation being he wanted to anglicise his name for political and business purposes. He did run as a mayoral candidate under the Angleton name in the 1973 City of Miami Primary as per his obit and confirmed by the Miami-Dade County Elections Department[24].

With all of the bits and pieces falling into place nicely, just one more document was needed in order to prove beyond any doubt that James Angleton Sr., and therefore James Angleton Jr., could not be related to the late James Jesus Angleton. The state of Florida make death certificates available as part of the public records. The required information was sent in along with the purchase order and a week later James Angleton Sr.’s death certificate (link removed per request) arrived and confirmed what we already knew. The surviving spouse’s maiden name is indeed Penelope Kays and Angleton Sr. was born in S. Orange, New Jersey to parents Henry and Mary Angelo.  (Note: the death certificate is available and  can be viewed on request by those wanting to see verification of this for themselves.) It may never be known why James Angelo changed the family name or why he claimed to be the nephew of James Jesus Angleton. The fact of the matter is he did and he was in no way whatsoever related to the late spymaster.

Perhaps an even greater mystery is why Angleton Jr. decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, continuing the false claim of being a relative of James Jesus Angleton. We only know according to Caryn Anscomb[25]:

“The first known contact that JJA’s grandson, JA, Jr., had with a ufologist was with Richard Boylan in 1998.”

We also know it was four to five months after Michael Wolf Kruvant’s death[26] that Collins is in contact with Angleton Jr. on or before February 2001. There is speculation that Boylan’s, ex-NSA informant, Jesse[27], is one and the same as Angleton Jr., and while there are some reasons to suspect this to be the case, no evidence has been firmly established. However, Tim Cooper was also in contact with Angleton Jr. by at least March 26, 2000, whereby, they had a 45-minute chat on the phone about how Mangold’s book irritated his family for years, which establishes Cooper’s involvement with Angleton by at least this date.[28]

Who is James Angleton Jr.? We know he is the V.P. of Real Estate for the Federal Republic Bank and his resume as listed by the City of Miami shows heavy involvement in community activities including the Miami Chapter of Association of Former Intelligence Officers.  Other than the statement about twenty-five years involvement in real estate, little else is known about his career. As with the father, we dug deeper and revealed some startling surprises.

“James Angleton Jr. has been named as a new board member for the Jackson Memorial Foundation’s Jackson Metropolitans. He will help the Jackson Mets raise funds for various high-tech projects and cutting edge treatments at Jackson. Angleton is vice president/senior real estate lender at TotalBank in Miami. He began his banking career in 1980 after graduating from the University of Miami with degrees in finance and political science.”[29]

Angleton Jr. was hired August 6, 2001 from TotalBank to a yet-to-be-created position with the United Teachers of Dade (UTD), which he left sometime in 2004 or earlier amid a huge scandal to head up a golf tournament company[30] and then on to the Hemisphere National Bank[31].

Miami-Dade Union Drops Suit Against Whistleblower. When the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) reached a settlement with former president Pat Tornillo over the repayment of some of the dues he appropriated for his personal use, it received coverage in the Miami Herald. But there hasn’t been a peep about UTD and the American Federation of Teachers dropping their lawsuit against former UTD Chief Financial Officer James Angleton Jr., the man who called in the FBI when he discovered Tornillo’s crimes.

After the FBI raid and the establishment of an AFT administratorship, Angleton was suspended without pay – even though at the time Tornillo was still collecting a paycheck. The union subsequently filed suit against Angleton, claiming it was the victim of Angleton’s “professional negligence” for not ferreting out Tornillo’s misappropriations sooner.

That charge was an obvious frivolity, since Tornillo’s escapades were the subject of numerous reports on local television, and UTD was many months delinquent in paying its state and national dues because of its financial troubles. Angleton has moved on, and is currently the senior vice president of Hemisphere National Bank in Miami.” [32]

Indeed, what were the details in this lawsuit against Angleton? This was a hot news item that ran in the Miami Herald for a couple of years. Needless to say, Angleton Jr.’s and Albaum’s roles seem questionable. Just how can the Chief Financial Officer who handles the books and checks NOT know what’s going on? Albaum even admitted they saw the bills, but paid them anyway without question. What part of fiscal responsibility didn’t Albaum and Angleton Jr. understand? Rebecca Wakefield reached a similar conclusion in her article for the Miami New Times, “Hot for Teachers Share”.

“…Actually, no matter who leads the union, its health requires a vigilant membership that demands transparency. Tornillo got away with so much for so long because others let him. Here are a few highlights from two lawsuits UTD and its parent, the American Federation of Teachers, filed against Tornillo and other former union officials and employees:

One lawsuit, filed last year, charges that Tornillo, former union president Murray Sisselman, and their wives had been “systematically looting” union coffers since at least 1990, making off with more than three million dollars.

James Angleton, Jr. met Tornillo when his bank (TotalBank) loaned the union money to build a headquarters on Biscayne Boulevard. In August 2001, Tornillo offered him a $135,000 gig as the union’s chief financial officer. Boss man had been siphoning union money for years. Why would he suddenly want to create a new position and hire an outsider who would inevitably discover the mess in the books?

The answer, according to the lawsuit, was that Angleton was happy to cover up Tornillo’s malfeasance in order to enrich himself and his friends. He hired as consultants long-time friend David Albaum and Robert Heber, an ex-spy who helped Angleton start up the Miami chapter of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers (even, stupidly, listing the UTD building as a principal place of business). Albaum collected $288,043 for 18 months of advising his buddy. Heber got $48,084. “It is unclear what work Heber performed for UTD or Angleton,” alleges the lawsuit.

Angleton made liberal use of signature stamps for both Tornillo and Johnson, thus getting around the necessary dual approvals for spending union money. He fired Grant Thornton, the accounting firm that had audited the union’s books for years, and hired another firm, Cummings-Grayson, which also proved inept and is also included in the UTD lawsuit.

Angleton also, the lawsuit claims, mismanaged the construction of the union building to the degree that an $11 million project eventually cost $19 million. Angleton and Albaum loaned the sinking union money at mind-blowing rates — $76,000 interest over five months on a loan of $150,000. Another Angleton associate, attorney Richard Krinzman (a former Friends of WLRN board chairman), also loaned UTD money — $100,000, for which he received $10,000 in interest over just three months. Krinzman at the time was representing a developer in its attempt to buy a HUD building for the elderly that UTD owned. He also was the attorney for a company owned by Angleton and his father, a clear conflict of interest. To cover up all this and more, Angleton presented false numbers to the union’s executive board and local banks.

By April 2003 the union’s serious financial problems were becoming known. So Angleton ran to the FBI and tattled on Tornillo. Then he gave the Miami Herald a compelling story about how sickly Murray Sisselman had confessed Tornillo’s crimes, picturesquely, over a meal at the Rascal House. Conveniently, Sisselman was dead and couldn’t confirm this version of events. After spending 18 months looking at its ledgers, the union decided in October to sue Angleton and Albaum.[33]

Further back in the ’80s you will find that Angleton Sr. and Angleton Jr. were involved in real estate, motels and restaurants chains. The whole Angleton/Angelo family deals in real estate and construction. Both Angleton’s were activists for cleaning up Biscayne Boulevard, which was becoming a drug and red-light district.  No doubt in part to protect their investments. Angleton Jr. also has done considerable charity work to his credit, but which also seems to be a requirement as entrance to and movement among the upper echelon of Miami society for political and business contacts.

Let’s play intelligence games!

Just how did the Association of Former Intelligence Officers get into the act? In March 2001, James Angleton Jr. along with Robert A. Heber and Thomas R. Spencer Jr. incorporated (see Appendix G) the “Miami-Dade Chapter of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers” at the Florida Department of State, Division of Corporations. This was after Angleton Jr.’s contact with Tim Cooper, Puthoff and Collins.[34] The Chapter status was active until dissolved September 16, 2005. It was replaced by a more informal organization; the Ted Shackley Miami Chapter of AFIO, which is currently still active.

This was apparently the same year, 2001, that Angleton Sr.’s brain tumor was discovered. Does this incorporation have any link to Angleton Sr.’s claim in his obituary with text given by the family of being part of a “governmental intelligence agency for over 20 years”, even though in the Olympia Ross article that government mission was “to locate, rehabilitate and repaint older buildings”. Then again, maybe it’s Spencer’s long-term desire to be a spook[35] that brought him together with Angleton and Heber to create the Miami-Dade Chapter. Since both Angleton Jr. and Heber were implicated in the UTD scandal it might be of value to take a look at these two other individuals as Angleton Jr. has already been covered. The following biographies were found on the Internet.

“Thomas R. Spencer, Jr.- CNP 1996; life member Association of Former Intelligence Officers 1; senior partner, Spencer & Klein, P.A. 2 ; author, Jury Trials in Commercial Cases, Florida Bar Journal, March 1982, “Florida Small Business Practice,” Florida Bar Journal, 1987, and other journal pieces; member, Dade County and American Bar Associations, Florida Bar Association, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Federalist Society 3, Federal Bar Association, International Bar Association, Republican Lawyers Association, and the Foreign Trade Association; founder and former chairman, Film Society of Miami, Inc., Miami Film Festival; president, University of Miami Alumni Association; life member, Atlantic Circle, and MartindaleHubbell Preeminent Lawyers of America.”[36]

Spencer was also one of the primary attorneys for Foutanga Dit Babani Sissoko, a West African multimillionaire philanthropist, who turns out to have fraudulently obtained his money.

“A week before the dinner [with President Clinton], Mr. Sissoko had been arrested in Europe on a United States warrant and charged with trying to smuggle two Vietnam-era military helicopters out of Miami to Africa and offering a $30,000 bribe to a United States Customs agent.”[37] Sissoko, was later convicted of gratuity a reduced felony count among other things, but not before he gave Spencer and the other two defense lawyers a $65,000 Mercedes Benz from stolen money, which Spencer, while shocked, will probably keep it because he paid taxes on it.”[38] [39]

“Thomas R. Spencer Jr., of Spencer & Klein, has been elected to the board of directors of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers (AFIO) in McLean, VA. The AFIO is the national research and resource organization developing policy for the intelligence community, Congress and the public. Spencer practices in Miami and Washington, DC.”[40]

There is less information on Heber, but enough to wonder what he was being paid for when hired by Angleton Jr. for UTD work.

“Robert A. Heber is former U.S. ARMY Aviator and Vietnam veteran who served as Enlisted, Warrant Officer, and as a Commissioned Officer with the final rank of Major in Military Intelligence. He served in Vietnam as an Aircraft Commander and Air Operations Officer for Headquarters II Field Force and also served as an Intelligence Officer with the Special Operations Group of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). While with the CIA, he had experience in counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, para-military operations and the collection and dissemination of intelligence.  He holds a TOP SECRET security clearance with the Department of Defense. His civilian career has included positions with the Sikorsky Aircraft and Pratt & Whitney divisions of United Technologies Corporation as well as with the Cessna Aircraft Company.  He holds Commercial pilot ratings for single and multi-engine aircraft as well as helicopters and served as a combat helicopter flight instructor at the U.S. Army Aviation School on his return from Vietnam. Since his retirement from United Technologies in early 1997, he has been a management consultant providing aviation and security consulting services to various individuals and organizations including the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defence.” [41]

Heber had also incorporated DADE AVIATION SERVICES, INC. between 1992 and 1993 before it was dissolved as well as a couple of other organizations, GRYPHON INTERNATIONAL, INC. (2002 and currently active) and GRYPHON GLOBAL SOLUTIONS LLC (2005-2007).

In 2004, Angleton Jr., is listed as president [42] of the Ted Shackley Chapter. Speculatively speaking, he has a political reason for being associated with James Jesus Angleton via his father’s claim of being James Jesus’ nephew as he lists the Ted Shackley Chapter in his biography. It could also be of benefit to Heber in Homeland Security and intelligence work to have an association with the family of the famous CIA spymaster provided he is aware of the claim. This leads one to consider if Spencer and Heber are not only colleagues, but also most likely friends of Angleton Jr. Could they be at least close enough to know Angleton’s two brothers are named Angelo? Did they have knowledge that Angleton Sr. and Junior were passing themselves off as being related to James Jesus Angleton?

If we back up to 2004 again we find another interesting event sponsored by The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and The Ted Shackley Miami Chapter of AFIO[43] (see Appendix H).  The Chapter scheduled an event with Edgar Mitchell and Hal Puthoff. Puthoff is also a figure in Exempt from Disclosure. It was Puthoff who introduced Collins to the Angleton Jr., who claimed to be James Jesus’ Miami grandson back in 2001.[44] Collins was even aware that grandson Angleton Jr. wanted Puthoff to come to Florida and talk about zero point energy.[45] The event was cancelled due to a hurricane (see Appendix I). However, it’s clear there was an earlier connection with Angleton Jr. and Puthoff. Angleton had also given copies of his alleged Einstein notes to Puthoff, as described in early 2007 at the Reality Uncovered forum:

“JJA (Jesse Angleton Jr.) sent the excerpts of his alleged grandfather’s CIA notes to several people, allegedly four to six individuals starting in 2001. It was revealed to Jack’s thread that Hal Puthoff and Boylan were two of these folks. Bob was obviously a third. The identities of the remaining individuals have not been revealed.[46]

When one considers the subject detail of these notes, you could be forgiven for thinking they were written with a very specific target audience in mind. Why would James Jesus Angleton be in possession of notes describing successful teleportation experiments in the 1980’s is anybody’s guess – considering he left the CIA years earlier. Another fringe technology to receive the Angleton/Einstein notes treatment is magnetic wave (“EM wave”) antigravity propulsion, a subject that crops up repeatedly around the message boards and email lists of the UFOlogy circuit.

As with the actual identities involved in this story, the notes themselves do not stand up to closer scrutiny.

Where have we seen that before?

For anyone who doesn’t know Jack Sarfatti, he is a cosmology physicist with a Physics BA from Cornell and a PhD from the University of California who runs a popular online discussion group that deals with a number of fringe physics and technology subjects. In 2006 during a discussion around the alleged notes that Bob Collins published in Exempt from Disclosure, Jack Sarfatti recognized that many of the physics concepts attributed to the “Einstein quotes” were actually concepts Sarfatti himself publicly wrote about in 1996.

It didn’t take very long for several members of the email list to recognize that the notes quoted in Bob Collins book were actually direct, almost word-for-word copies lifted from Jack Sarfatti’s “QShip”[47] writings from 1998, which can still be viewed online today.

The specific quote identified as clear plagiarism came from page 158 in Collins’ book, and quoted earlier in this report.  Before long, other members of the email list began identifying other sections of the alleged “Angleton Notes” that held text directly copied from Sarfatti’s earlier public writings.

A few examples of clear plagiarism are shown below. Keep in mind that Angleton began releasing these “notes,” allegedly from the journals of his CIA grandfather, around 2001. Jack wrote his quotes in 1996 through 1998:

JJA Jr: “Dr. Einstein expanded …. The fuselage of the craft was more liken to a high temperature superconductor to which the occupants do not feel the g forces at high accelerations or sharp turns. Their is a direct correlation to mindlinkage via headband and handpanels.” [23]

Jack: “I mean his remarks that the fuselage of the craft is a high temperature superconductor, that the occupants do not feel high-g forces in sharp right-angle turns at very high apparent accelerations to the external observer, and that the ship is controlled in a direct mind-link between the pilot and the craft via the headband and the hand-imprint panels.”

JJA Jr: “The qualitative picture is a local field of positive cosmological constants contributing to the local metric field in a small boundary layer around the skin of the craft. The layer was controlled by the EM brainwave of the pilot. The pilot also has a Q* type of field.

Jack: “…the qualitative picture a local field of positive cosmological constant contributing to the local metric field in a small boundary layer around the skin of the space craft. The detailed structure of this boundary layer is somehow controlled by the EM brain-waves of the pilot in addition to the pilot’s Q* field, and other auxiliary EM fields and giant Q’s built into the ship’s architecture.”

It became clear to everyone following the discussion that somewhere along the line, whatever excerpts Angleton Jr. was sending out to Collins and others were clearly *not* from any sort of secret CIA journal, but instead copied from existing public texts that had existed on the Internet for several years.

The response from this episode was tremendous. It revealed a great deal about the inner workings of the sources that supplied allegedly secret government inside information to Bob Collins, and which Collins subsequently published in his book. In an effort to defend himself from claims that *he* had plagiarized, Collins emailed Jack Sarfatti a quote from an early email by James Angleton Jr. from March 9, 2001 which detailed how he described his “grandfather’s” notes. His email to Bob Collins (and others) read as follows.

“From: kenya08@xxxxxx.net

He (grandfather) wrote it down and then added sentences to like introduce what that portion of the equation stood for and put it away. He used index cards that have aluminum threads so you can not photo copy or fax eats toner as the page is all black. I guess the aluminum shines while the light from the copier goes over it. They are written in pencil of a light gray, faint script. He details that the presentation was 4 hours. First hour was articulating the many departments used to breakdown and put together. Second hour was reading the equations and expanding on each. Third hour was lunch with speeches from the AF and Navy. Fourth hour was a demonstration of the equations in testing. At that time they claimed how they were perfecting the wobble of the vehicle. A filmstrip was shown of an actual one of theirs and what we had to date different. At the end of the presentation was a 4 min tape of ALF who died months later. [Alien Life Form, mighty original hey?] So, according to the matter, it worked sort-of and then was perfected as mentioned before in 1973.”

Jack Sarfatti, in a subsequent email, also confirmed that Angleton Jr. began distributing his information in 2001:

“PS My first contact with Jim Angleton Jr was in 2001 when he contacted me. I had no idea of any Angleton involvement in UFOs until then. My Q-Ship paper was early 1998 based on the Corso-Birnes book and other sources that I cited none of which were any secret notes.”

Once the proof was laid out, a number of folks immediately jumped on Bob Collins, ignoring the fact that he was only quoting a source – Angleton Jr. Instead of going after Angleton Jr., the following writers accused Collins himself of plagiarism.

Dr. Christopher “Kit” Green on February 11, 2007:

“Explains a lot about the truth of the word Plagiarism. Jack is owed an apology.”

When further pressed on the issue from a private researcher, Kit responded with a defense of Angleton Jr. – stating that he knows him personally and vouches for him, and accuses Collins of plagiarizing often, as he writes on February 12th:

“The main problem I have with THIS explanation is that: a) I know Angleton, and he seems pretty straight-up…weird story but seems to not have a personality to steal language; Collins has done the same to me as seems he may have done here…often: Plagiarize.”

Dr. Eric Davis: On February 22, 2007 Dr. Eric Davis decides to chime in as well.  Could this be related to the fact that some of the Angleton notes reference teleportation – distributed around the same time Eric Davis released his Air Force teleportation paper?[48]

“All of these alleged claims are nothing but senseless, baseless rumors that have taken on a life of their own.  But it looks like most of you have already figured this out while I was traveling at a conference.  I am just now getting caught up on 600+ e-mails.

Jack needs the freedom to get back to doing physics research because this kind of internet chatter must be totally distracting.  And somehow Jack always ends up being on the receiving end of someone’s insane allegations.”

Gene Loscowski: The following month, Gene Loscowski, – aka Gene Lakes, aka Paul McGovern, aka Nick Weston, aka Rick Doty aka Insert-name-here[49] – a shadowy persona that exists only as an email identity and heavily involved in promoting the 2005 Serpo hoax, attempts to corroborate something Angleton had told Collins.

“On 3/8/07, Sonata <Sonata@donet.com> wrote:

Angleton also mentioned some operations were moved into the Utah mountains. The “metal” is that room temp super-conducting material……Rmc”

Gene Loscowski wrote:

“Heard this same story”

When Bob Collins himself realized that the Angleton/Einstein notes contained extracts from Sarfatti’s text of 1998, he came up with an “explanation” for this very uncomfortable fact:

Dan Smith writes:
“Between 1998 and 2001 the bulk of his fathers notes were stolen from a warehouse.  Some of the remaining notes were water damaged in a hurricane after 2001.  Also, these notes had been reviewed by the FBI, before they were stolen.

After being stolen, JA, Jr., attempted to retrieve the copies that he had already distributed.  Some of these returned copies were then transmitted to Bob Collins and appeared in the 2nd edition of EfD.  Somewhere in that confusion, it appears that some of Jack’s and Mondanese’s writings were collated into the copies of the original notes, and this is what had appeared in Collins’ book.” [50]

The above explanation is rendered absolutely meaningless when one considers the notes are not genuine in the first place as Angleton Jr. isn’t who he claims to be. The sole reason for Sarfatti’s own words being used in writings allegedly from 1952 is quite simple: They were copied, or in other words plagiarized, in order to lend some kind of credence to a bunch of concocted clap-trap.

Earlier, before all of these plagiarism revelations in February 2006 – when RU researchers first suspected that the Florida man calling himself Angleton Jr. was not who he claimed to be – we asked Kit Green if he knew the man and whether anything he had to write was legitimate or not. Kit’s response, posted further above, indicated that Kit not only knows the Florida Angleton, but had personal dealings with him and his family.

In the email, it could be argued that Kit provides a convincing case that the “real” Angleton grandson is a “stand-up” person – the same thing he said to other researchers as quoted above.  This “defense” of Angleton Jr. also reveals the critical importance of his “grandfather’s” notes to the process, motives and agenda of the people who distribute UFO information to the public through people like Bob Collins, Bill Moore, Bruce Maccabee, Jamie Shandera, Standon Friedman, and many, many others.

We wanted to find out who it was that first introduced Bob Collins to Angleton in the first place, so we asked him via email. He responded within a few minutes:

Subject: Re: Information

I think it was Hal Puthoff, but that was in 2001. JA Jr is a banker in Miami. Sarfatti talked to him once and I several times….he doesn’t like to be pestered……Rmc

This particular response forced us to review our emails from a couple of years ago where we interviewed Hal. In the 2007 interview, Hal was asked for his opinion on the plagiarism within the Angleton Notes. He replied:

“That material (I got it from Collins) sure looked plagiarized to me from the git-go.  On this Jack and I have always agreed.  I just don’t know the source of plagiarism.  I pointed this out to Collins right away, so the ball went back into his court.”

He was quick to point out that he received the material directly from Collins, though the information from Collins and others would suggest he received it directly from Angleton. There was also no suggestion that he may have had a hand in introducing Angleton to Collins in the first place.

Email from Bob Collins to a short email list on June 12, 2008:

“Get off it, it’s not what I wish to believe, Angleton Jr. told me that story, I get very tired of being accused. He is the same Angleton that sent those Einstein notes to Hal Puthoff and I. Angleton also mentioned that guard you talk about who snapped to attention when Nixon showed up. Angleton Jr. said Be Be Rebozo , Jack Gleason, Angleton Sr. and Angleton Jr. were there.

Angleton Jr. said his father told him to be quiet and NOT say a word; Jr said the Alien smelled really bad lying in that cylindrical coffin and wore a head band. He said the Alien was brought up to Homstead from a Navy Sub Base in the Caribbean

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rebozo

I don’t run around making proclamations or claim I know all the answers, but I get accused of that! I state the “facts” as I know them and stick to those “facts.” I don’t use HYPE or try to sensationalize the information, but I sure get attacked more often than not……Rmc”

Regardless of who it was who first introduced Angleton to Collins and irrespective of who Angleton sent the notes to, it was very revealing to see all of the same names involved that we see in all other aspects of our investigation into the long-running scam that has infected certain areas of UFOlogy for over thirty years now.

We did give James Angleton Jr. several chances to clarify his own part in this story. The following is an email sent to him in late April 2009 containing several specific questions:

Subject: Request for Clarification

Hello Jim,

You may remember I contacted you in early 2007.

I am in the process of writing an article and would appreciate your cooperation with the following. I have several questions for you and all of them can be answered quickly and without any further ado.

Are you the grandson of  ‘James Jesus Angleton’, nicknamed ‘Kingfisher’, who was the Counter Intelligence (CI) Chief for the CIA, that was forced to retire Christmas Eve 1975 from the CIA? If not do you have any family relationship at all to James Jesus Angleton and if so what is it?

Did you share or in any manner provide Bob Collins or his associates any information from James Jesus Angleton’s personal, handwritten notes, which may have been taken during CIA briefings (classified or not). Do you even have such notes?

Did you share or in any manner provide Bob Collins or his associates any information from your father’s personal, handwritten notes? Alleged to be in the thousands. Do you even have such notes?

Did you relay any of the following information (or similar) to Bob Collins or one of his associates with the understanding you are the grandson or another close relative of James Jesus Angleton?

As a further concluding remark to this chapter, both Tim Cooper’s father MSgt Harry B Cooper, now deceased and Jim Angleton’s grandfather (James Jesus Angleton, Section 2, Chapter 1), also deceased in 1987, have both described early government work involving teleportation experiments. One such set of experiments was said to have taken place at Wright-Patterson AFB in early 60s. Needless to say, those early experiments ended up in disaster where solid innate matter was turned inside out as did the animals they used in the experiments. Jim Angleton’s grandfather JJA who is mentioned above related the following with Jim reading from his CIA notes. Angleton writes: The first transport blew up a rat. It literally blew up into pieces. A visitor (Alien) helped them tweak the dimensions to send the rate from point “a” to point “b.” But as of 1979, they had not been able to make a rat move. However, in the ’90s, they were successful in moving water from point “a” to point “b.” Page 137, Exempt From Disclosure, 2nd Edition, Robert M. Collins, with Richard C Doty and Timothy S Cooper, 2006.

Did you relay the following information (or similar) to Bob Collins or one of his associates with the understanding you are the grandson or another close relative of James Jesus Angleton:

“Below is an extract taken from the hundreds of personal hand written notes taken during classified CIA briefings which belonged to James J Angleton who was fired/retired form the CIA in 1974…Graciously, the grandson James Angleton provided many of the notes to these authors.” Page 157, Exempt From Disclosure, 2nd Edition, Robert M. Collins, with Richard C Doty and Timothy S Cooper, 2006.

In a previous email to me you wrote that you had:
“…knowledge of their conduct. Other than this, the internet is full of frauds, wanna-be’s and crazies… Please do not forward their gossip.”

The quotes I have pasted above are not gossip, but the actual context of a book. Any reply you give to this email can be seen as an opportunity to clarify or rebut such statements.

If you wish to talk to me about this matter, you can contact me on xxxxxxxxxx.

Best Regards,
Stephen Broadbent

Despite opening a dialogue and stating (several times) an intention to call, Angleton Jr. never did take the opportunity to answer those very simple questions in the email above.

Exempt From Facts

The wealth of evidence we have uncovered and documented within this article couldn’t be any clearer. Neither Angleton Jr. nor his deceased father have any kind of family relationship to the late James Jesus Angleton and neither of them have a background in the Intelligence services. Any and all claims of “secret” notes bequeathed to them by their father/grandfather are bogus and have absolutely no basis in reality. The knock on effect of this simple fact is one that reaches far and wide, for example, from p157-p158 Exempt from Disclosure 2nd Ed.:

“It must be emphasized that JJJA [sic] was not a technical person so the notes are sketchy and unclear in many cases. The reason for presenting this extract is to show readers the similarity between what the Los Alamos source as saying and what the “Einstein notes” say:”

As we have already determined, the “Einstein notes” are bogus and if they are being used in order to bolster the claims of a conveniently unnamed Los Alamos source, which the authors themselves disavow as being unverified documents[51], one can safely assume that those claims are also bogus. With such claims forming the basis for ludicrous “Reverse Engineering Programs” and all which that entails, i.e. so called crash retrievals and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”-type exchange programs, one must begin to wonder if the only thing these unnamed sources are good for is dissecting the plots of popular science fiction movies. The similarities between the “Einstein notes” and the claims of the LANL source would also suggest that the same people maybe involved in creating and disseminating the myth in the first place.

One must now ask the question what role Bob Collins has played in all of this. If he truly wanted to verify the information he had been given, it would have been a simple task for him to do exactly as we have done. The information we have uncovered is available both on the Internet and as part of the public record. A quick look at the ages of the three Angleton’s should have been enough to set alarm bells ringing. Sadly, as is the case with many of the other sources quoted in his book, once you start looking a little deeper into their identities and the claims attributed to them, everything simply falls apart at the seams. When pressed with this unavoidable truth, Collins becomes insulting and dismissive of any and all arguments he is presented with. Are those the actions of someone with a desire for reporting the truth or are they the actions of someone who is desperate to continue a pitiful charade on behalf of those behind the fantasy and the lies? In a very simple statement Collins himself has given the answer, “Get off it, it’s not what I wish to believe…”[52]

That group, known by us as “Scammers Inc.” are being subjected to the same level of scrutiny we have afforded to the James Angleton Jr. claims. That particular investigation has uncovered the age-old motive of greed as the driving force behind the creation of the Core Story hoax. They have discovered if you can convince enough investors that you have an extensive background in the highly secretive world of US Intelligence and were privy to the darkest of secrets involving crashed flying saucers and the technology surrounding them, the earning potential reaches high into the stratosphere. Some people clearly have more money than sense…

The Philosophy Within the MJ-12 Documents

Bogus MJ12 Document

Bogus MJ12 Document

According to the 2007 MUFON Report, a "mysterious" AF Colonel and Rick Doty contacted Moore initially in September of 1980.  Taking this date into consideration, RU researchers decided to dig further back into the ongoing activities of the U.S. Air Force during this time period, and any place where the same philosophy might have appeared prior to making its way to Moore in 1980.  An obvious place to look would be the Air Force just before, and just after, 1980.  The question was – where to start?

As we previously reported, the 2005 article Hawk Tales by Bruce Maccabee was written as a supplement to Robert Collins’ 2005 book Exempt from Disclosure , and it provides a number of important clues.

This article includes references to names and events that took place at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1979 and earlier.  According to Maccabee’s 1985 interview with Kellerstrass (Hawk), Kellerstrass claims that Dale Graff shared an entire litany of alien/MJ-12 stories with him while they both served on the base in 1978-1979.  At the same time, Dale Graff was working very closely with SRI and Hal Puthoff on highly classified remote viewing research.

We eventually interviewed Dale Graff and learned that, at the time of those late-night "gee wiz" speculative conversations, Kellerstrass had only limited knowledge of the RV projects Dale and Hal were working on.  Dale admitted that, at the time, he repeatedly met with his supervisor, Dr. Anthony Cacioppo, to discuss the classified remote viewing research. When asked if he’d attended any "highly classified meetings" with Dr. Cacioppo at the time, would those likely have been the Remote Viewing work?  "Absolutely," Dale answered.  At the same time Dr. Cacioppo, and to a limited degree Dale Graff as well, were also involved in Project Blue Book work going on at the base before the Project was ended.  Kellerstrass reported to Maccabee that Dale and Cacioppo were meeting with a "secret committee" to discuss the issue of UFOs.  UFO believer groups would later label this committee as "MJ-12."

Maccabee states in his introduction that Kellerstrass was “One of the main sources of information" for Exempt from Disclosure .

In the interview, Kellerstrass claims that Dale Graff, as early as 1978, was privately feeding Kellerstrass the same exact themes and ideas (the “Philosophy” as described in the 2007 MUFON document) that would eventually make their way into the early 80’s versions of the MJ-12 documents, and eventually, Project Serpo in 2005 as well.  This philosophy was injected and mixed up with the common UFO "lore" that Moore and Shandera were already feeding Doty. Their Roswell/UFO stories were taken, injected with the philosophy, and recycled back to the UFO community.

In 1978, Ernie claims that Dale Graff told him about:

(1) A secret book containing information about an “EBE” (Extra-terrestrial Biological Entity) and multiple alien races.
(2) Early history of humanity from 10,000 years ago to the time of Christ, suggesting Christ as a central theme.
(3) Captured Alien Craft/Technology and Bodies/Prisoners.
(4) Aliens as vegetarians.
(5) Their star-system having a double-star, or double-sun.

However 1979 wasn’t Dale’s first interaction with SRI – according to Paul Smith’s chronology, in 1975 Air Force FTD became the “primary funder” of the SRI research program, with Dale Graff supervising.  If true, this implies a close relationship between Dale Graff and Harold Puthoff, starting in 1975.  By 1979, this relationship would have been at least 4 years old, and Dale was soon to become a very important figure in the government’s Remote Viewing research.

Shortly after these alleged Dale-Ernie conversations in 1979, the "mysterious" AF Colonel, Rick Doty and others contacted Ufologist and author Bill Moore in September of 1980.

The Philosophy Spreads, Travels from Wright Patterson 1979 to MJ-12 1980s

Rick Doty

Rick Doty

By 1981, Doty had revealed to Moore the information about crashed saucers and dead aliens which were all compiled in the original “Aquarius” document.  The “philosophy” of this document bears striking resemblance to the “philosophy” Dale Graff was feeding Ernie Kellerstrauss during 1978/1979.

In 1980 Rick Doty began actively distributing these same ideas to Moore, and later to Howe.  Obviously, at least these two men, Doty and Graff, were reading from the same book and following the same plot. The real question is, was that plot provided to them from outside individuals?

As Moore pointed out (quote from the MUFON document):

“I do know from first-hand experience that there was a tremendous amount of government disinformation involved, and that a large proportion of what we are hearing today about malevolent aliens, underground bases and secret treaties with the U.S. government has its roots firmly planted in the Bennewitz affair. Stories of an alleged UFO crash at Aztec, New Mexico, are also a part of this picture….
[snip]
And, since connections can be shown to exist between those who are spreading it now and those who were spreading it then, both from the Bennewitz angle and from within the intelligence community, it seems reasonable to assume that those responsible for it are not satisfied that their task has been completed, even after all this time…. The real question is ‘Why?’"

Moore draws the premature and erroneous conclusion that what Doty provided to him was government disinformation.  The truth is, the disinformation could just as easily have been a group effort from a private group outside of the authority or knowledge of the U.S. government.  Are these individuals still actively trying to distribute this same philosophy? The 2005 Project Serpo debacle tells us that this is so.

The Contemporary Release of the "Philosophy"

Kit, Pat, and Hal

Kit, Pat, and Hal

This time, the same group who released the earlier MJ-12 documents attempted to use the technology of the Internet to distribute the same meme again, nearly 25 years after they started the effort in 1980.  That attempt to utilize the power of the Internet is ultimately what led to their demise.  The group which RU researchers discovered actively distributing Serpo related materials included the same folks who were central figures in the MJ12/Aquarius activity with Moore/Pratt/Shandera….that group included, in part, Robert Collins and Rick Doty.   But this time, through a counter-intelligence initiative conducted against the group by Reality Uncovered investigators, additional members of those involved alongside Doty were finally revealed. Two of these individuals included Dr. Harold Puthoff and Dr. Christopher (Kit) Green.

Those were only the "semi-public" individuals who portrayed themselves as only involved with "investigating" the releases alongside those individuals who were chosen (by allegedly "anonymous" sources) to release the information via email and the web. Their (Green and Puthoff’s) intention was to remain "under the radar," during the releases. The non-public members of the group consist of a satellite group of ex-intelligence and ex-military men – all collaborating to inject various parts of this story into the field of Ufology.  These satellite “agents” include: James Angleton Jr., an Arizona group which may or may not include a J. Lackey, and other individuals who may be posing as fake email identities (either real stolen names, or fake ones entirely) including a Paul McGovern, Gene Lakes, Herb Milton (no longer active), and Tamara Linden.  One involved individual even falsely presented himself, in person, at a UFO conference as Paul McGovern. There may still be additional individuals involved as well.

Serpo – More of the Same

The general theme of the storyline coming from Dale Graff in 1979, and Rick Doty in 1980 are now clear.  The Aquarius document and MJ12 stories originated from the same place and had the same themes, the “Philosophy” that MUFON investigators recognized from the MJ12 information, and the following ideology that came from Graff/Kellerstrass. All of those sources seek to promote the same philosophy.

(1) A secret book containing information about “EBE”, multiple alien races
(2) Early history from 10,000 years ago to the time of Christ
(3) Captured Alien Craft and Bodies/Prisoners (Genetic Engineering)
(4) Aliens as vegetarians
(5) Their star-system having a double-star, or double-sun.

In 2005, we discovered the same story recycled under the new name Project Serpo:

Original “Anonymous” posting November 2005 (Crashed Alien Ship and “Prisoner”):

“One live entity [EBE] was found hiding behind a rock. The entity was given water but declined food. The entity was later transferred to Los Alamos.”

Posted by “Anonymous” November 4, 2005 (Double-Sun):

“The planet had two suns but their angles were small and allowed some darkness on the planet depending on one’s location.”

Posted by “Anonymous” November 7, 2005 (Secret Book about “EBE” containing information about multiple Alien races – genetic manipulation also used as a theme)

“The "Red Book" lists nine different visitors . We determined recently that some of the visitors were the same type of race but a "mechanical lifeform." They were hybrid beings that were created in a laboratory rather than by natural birth.”

Posted by “Anonymous” November 9, 2005 (Early history from 10,000 years ago to the time of Christ):

“The Eben civilization was estimated to be about 10,000 years old . They evolved from another planet, not on Serpo. The original home planet of the Ebens was threatened with extreme volcanic activity. [snip]

The Ebens have been space travelers for the past 2,000 years. The Ebens first visited Earth about 2,000 years ago.

The Ufologists who were publishing and promoting this new material, actually had the insight to recognize the comment of the visitation 2000 years ago from the 1980’s Aquarius document, and even called attention to it on the Serpo website.  Ironically, they considered the “match” a form of confirmation that the new information was legitimate.  They did not realize, or could not realize, that the source in both cases was the same exact person, Rick Doty and his group.  And that’s why the material was identical.

Posted by “Anonymous” November 14, 2005 (Aliens as Vegetarians):

"As I mentioned before, the Ebens allowed us to kill the beasts for meat. The meat isn’t really bad, 899 says it tastes like Bear, which I never ate. But Ebens look at us very strange when we eat meat. Strange, they can clone creatures and other species of humans but they can’t eat meat.

Same “philosophy” and the same core story, with a whole lot of erroneous “details” thrown in for show.  But what we were looking at in 2005 was a rehash of the information Moore received in 1980 from Doty and others, Linda Howe received from Doty and others, and which Ernie Kellerstrauss allegedly received from Dale Graff in 1979.

The origin of the story appears to be between 1978 and 1980.  And the group who created it appears to be centered around the active (at the time) Remote Viewing work, which during 1979 for the Air Force, was at Wright-Patterson FTD (Dale Graff/Ernie Kellerstrass) and SRI (Hal Puthoff), and for the CIA was the Office of Science and Technology (Kit Green).

It should be noted that the involvement of particular individuals in these releases, from 1979 through 2005, does not automatically imply nefarious motives. But it does demand appropriate explanation.  False stories were injected into Ufology, a field that strives, even today, to achieve credibility.  These stories negatively impacted that credibility in a big way, especially after th 1988 UFO Live! broadcast.

Next, we will discuss a shocking additional person who was also discussing elements of this same exact philosophy in the mid-to-late 1970’s, around the same time the Graff-Kellerstrass conversations were allegedly taking place.

Bill Moore’s Disinfo – A Vehicle for Injected Social Memes

Bill Moore Most anyone who’s researched Ufology history for any length of time knows the story of Bill Moore, Bob Pratt, and Jaime Shandera.  The short version is that following the publication of his book The Roswell Incident in the summer of 1980, Moore was contacted by someone claiming to be a Colonel at Offut AFB, as well as from another individual (Doty) from Kirkland AFB. Those contacting Moore convinced him that they were "high level government Intelligence" personnel who were "uncomfortable with the government’s continuing cover-up."

Puzzle Pieces from 1976 through 1985

No one has ever really pieced together, or fully exposed, all of the individuals who were involved in this early scam. Richard Doty is the only person who’s been publicly revealed as a contact. Moore’s announcement at MUFON in 1989 left much to be desired in terms of details and source names.

It took until 2007, at the MUFON International UFO Symposium Proceedings, for a well-written and thoroughly researched background expose to finally go public regarding these background activities surrounding the MJ-12 releases.  MUFON researchers did a brilliant job providing the public with a fair and balanced review of some of the activities of these scammers through the 1980s.

Bob Pratt It helped that they had access to the "secret tapes," in which MUFON UFO Journal Editor, Robert Pratt, had recorded meetings and phone conversations with Moore.  These tapes revealed some fascinating new details about the men behind the scam. (Unfortunately, Bob Pratt passed away in November 2005, the same year and month the hoaxers attempted to start releasing the same stories via Project Serpo.) The general timeline detailed in the MUFON document, covering the years before the MJ-12 stories went "public" is summarized as follows.

-> Since September 5, 1980, Moore communicated with a "mysterious AF Colonel" through "middleman" Richard Doty (much like Doty also served (and still does) as the "middleman" for Bob Collins, author of Exempt from Disclosure , and many of Collins’ own "mysterious" sources.

-> Doty and his "mysterious contacts" recycled information fed to them by Moore and Friedman and recycled that information, in the form of allegedly classified or secret documents and stories, to UFO researchers including Linda Howe, Bruce Maccabee and others.

-> December 29 and 30, 1981 – Doty meets Moore at a restaurant and provided him with three documents, one of which was the "one-page Aquarius Teletype."

-> In 1982, with Doty’s assistance, Moore tried to get Bob Pratt to help him publish a book centered upon the Aquarius/MJ12 documents. The book project fizzled out in 1983. Richard Doty cooperated under the pseudonym "Ronald L. Davis."

-> After Moore told Doty the story of a famous UFO hoax, Doty and his associates used those story details to create the "Aquarius Executive Briefing" document and a few months later attempted to pass it off as an authentic document to Ufologist Linda Howe in April of 1983.

Aquarius/MJ12 Documents Were Created from Data Recycled from Ufologists

The most significant finding of the MUFON report was that the released MJ-12/Aquarius documents recycled information Moore, Shandera and Pratt had previously fed Doty.  The Mufon report quotes Friedman in 1996 writing:

"…the simple fact of the matter is the Moore, Shandera, and I had already picked up on all the names of the [MJ-12] list prior to the receipt of the [MJ-12] film…"

From page 107 of the MUFON report we get a glimpse of the people who appear to be helping Doty run the scam.

Linda Howe "Some months later, in early 1983, I became aware that Rick was involved with a team of several others [in AFOSI], including one fellow from Denver that I knew of and at least one who was working out of Washington, D.C., in playing an elaborate disinformation game against a prominent UFO researcher [Linda Howe] who, at the time, had close connections with a major television film company [HBO] interested in doing a UFO documentary…."

The information that Doty was feeding Linda Howe was a story based upon the Aztec information Moore had fed Doty only months earlier.

On page 116, the author of the 2007 MUFON analysis recognizes the clear philosophy that was injected by Doty’s group into the material.

"The Aquarius Document contains “philosophy” as well as technical data. In the section which deals with the philosophy behind the need to maintain a “Top Secret” posture for as long as possible with respect to the Aquarius data, are the following two startling conclusions which have been arrived at by the US government with respect to UFOs:

(A) The events surrounding Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Christian religion were manipulations affected [sic] by beings of an advanced civilization from another world. [snip]

(B) Release of this data to the public would not only severely cripple the ability of the government (indeed any government in the Western world) to effectively govern, but would also severely damage the very fibre [sic] of Western civilization as we know it."

The Philosophy Distributed Within the MJ-12 Documents

In fact, MUFON got it exactly right. The philosophy that the creators of the documents were trying to distribute, by implanting it within stories of crashed aliens and, in 2005, stories about a human-alien exchange program, remains the same.

Some specific excerpts from those documents, released in the 1980’s, that portray how specific and how much focus was placed on this ideology is shown below.  The common theme is always the same – (1) Aliens “planting” Christ, (2) Hints of Genetic Manipulation throughout our evolution (notice the focus on evolution).  (3) Alien technology far exceeds our own but we have the potential to reverse-engineer it.  From the MJ-12 documents:

This first section injects the concept of Christ as a "planted" human.

“(TS/ORCON) Most governmental documents pertaining to UFO sightings, incidents and governmental policies, including Project Blue Book, have been released to the public under FOIA or under various other release programs.  [snip…] There was other information obtained from EBE that was deemed sensitive and not releasable to the public. Notably, Project Aquarius Volume IX, which pertains to tracing the Aliens’ first visitation of earth back some 5,000 years. EBE reported that 2,000 years ago his ancestors planted a human creature on earth to assist the inhabitants of earth in developing a civilization. This information was only vague and the exact identity or background information on this homo-sapien was not obtained. Undoubtfully [sic], if this information was released to the public, it would cause a worldwide religious panic. MJ3 has developed a plan that will allow release of Project Aquarius, Volumes I thru III.”

This next section injects the meme suggesting that humans have alien technology in our possession, and may be able to "reverse engineer" it with approprite [fringe] scientific funding and advancement.

“(TS/ORCON) In the 1976 MJ3 report (Atch 6), it was estimated the Aliens’ technology was many thousands of years ahead of United States technology. Our scientists speculate that until our technology develops to a level equal to the Aliens’ , we cannot understand the large volume of scientific information the United States has already gained from the Aliens. This advancement of United States Technology may take many hundreds of years.”

In fact, countless believers have latched on to this meme through the years, and an entire fringe scientific cottage industry is now based on alien "propulsion" and reverse engineered UFO craft.

ufopropulsion

Today you can find "researchers" who are attempting to "reverse engineer" UFO propulsion technology, clean energy technology, and other technologies that the "aliens" are supposedly offering humanity. Millionaires actually invest money into these sort of projects.

The next injected meme focuses on genetics.

“1. (TS/ORCON) PROJECT BANDO: (PROWORD: RISK) Originally established in 1949. Its mission was to collect and evaluate medical information from the surviving Aliens [sic] creature and the recovered Alien bodies. This Project medically examined EBE and provided United States medical researchers with certain answers to the evolution theory . (OPR: CIA) (Terminated in 1974).”

In the next update, we will outline how we used social networking analysis to connect these same MJ-12 memes to later releases, and directly to the same people who were distributing those releases in 2005.

Play it again, Scam

If the board members of Scammers Inc needed a blueprint for their plan to hoodwink wealthy investors with tales of crashed flying saucers and reverse engineered alien technology, they didn’t have to look very far. Conveniently for them, a blueprint already existed in the form of the Aztec UFO scam that fooled wealthy investor’s way back in the late 40’s and early 50’s.

Behind the Flying SaucersBlueprint for Deception
Frank Scully’s “Behind the Flying Saucers”, published in September 1950 by Henry Holt & Co, was a tale of crashed flying saucers and dead alien bodies, mixed in with a load of nonsense about where they came from, how they got here and why. Scully’s source of this unbelievable information was an acquaintance of his by the name of Silas Mason Newton and a mysterious “Dr Gee”. Dr Gee was allegedly a brilliant government scientist in the field of magnetic energy and told Scully he had examined crashed flying saucers for the government. In reality, Dr Gee’s real name was Leo GeBauer and he owned a radio and television parts store in Phoenix, Arizona. Newton was the president of his own oil exploration business, the Newton Oil Company. It was this field of oil exploration in which the two con artists were to make the money from their saucer scam.

Newton was no stranger to swindling wealthy individuals out of their hard earned money. In September 1934, he was arrested and charged with selling $25,000 of worthless stock to an individual. He was also investigated for two incidents of stock fraud and was sued for conning another person out of $28,000. Despite all of this though, nothing ever came of it and he was free to carry on with his illegal activities. His Flying Saucer/Brilliant Scientist scam were to make him and GeBauer more money than they ever could have dreamed of.

Signs of the Times
It is not difficult to discover what first gave the pair the idea of coming up with the flying saucer plan. They heard about an alleged incident near Death Valley in August 1949. A local newspaper, The Bakersfield Californian, reported the story of prospector Buck Fitzgerald who claimed to see a flying disc crash land followed by two “little men” jumping out and running away. There were many stories of people seeing things in the sky and assuming they were ships from other planets, with newspapers and radio stations alike often discussing the many sightings and what they might be, the technology they use and their purpose for being here.

Realising the potential of using such material for themselves, coupled with the “new” science they would be able to invent because it came from outer space, it didn’t take the pair long to get started. Only seven months later, in March 1950, an unidentified lecturer -later identified as Silas Newton- gave a fifty minute lecture on flying saucers at the University of Denver. In it, he talked about the crash of a saucer at Aztec, NM and proceeded to lay the foundations for the scam. He talked about the saucer and its (dead) personnel in great detail, he talked of alien artefacts in their possession “for research” and this is also where we see the introduction of the genius scientist by the name of Dr. Gee.

Fiction becomes intriguing possibility of a fantastic reality, invented characters become bona-fide people based on, well, nothing at really and before you know it, you have yourself an event. It matters not one jot that for the majority of people who hear the tale it will be written off as fantasist fiction, the story isn’t for them. It is for those people who are perhaps too trusting of folk and would never believe they are being set up for a hit. The believer will go out and tell the story to the people they know. Of them, a few will do the same thing -with embellishments of course- and the cycle will be repeated until eventually the story will be reported on the radio, talked about in bars and printed in newspapers etc. Imagine the potential if only six months later that same story appears in print in the form of Behind the Flying Saucers courtesy of Mr. Scully…

Men at Work
With all of this in place, the pair were free to bedazzle and befuddle those investors that were unfortunate to cross their path. The scam was both elegant and crude in equal measure. Newton would go into the desert and drill holes into which he would insert a quantity of oil. The next day, accompanied by potential investors, they would go out into the desert and demonstrate their amazing ability at locating oil using a wondrous device that had been invented by the brilliant Dr. Gee. Naturally, he was able to develop such a fantastic contraption thanks to the amazing secrets he had learned while examining the crashed flying saucer. Using this method, the pair not only managed to con some investors into purchasing worthless oil leases, but were also able to sell some of the devices at a lovely $18,500 each. The total figure they managed to squeeze out of the investors added up to $400,000 – which by today’s standards is estimated to be somewhere in the region of $19 million! One of those investors -Herman Flader- was fleeced for $231,000 all on his own. He would get his own back on the pair, however.

Reality Uncovered, Retro
Were John P. Cahn alive today, he would be made a honorary member of Reality Uncovered in a heartbeat. Who is he? You might ask. John P. Cahn was the investigative reporter who brought the Aztec UFO hoax crashing down around Newton and GeBauer’s ears. He also made Frank Scully look somewhat foolish in the process, with him having written the book that gave the conmen so much publicity in the first place.

John P. Cahn, or JP Cahn as he was known to his friends and associates, was a Stanford graduate and served in the US Navy. He subsequently worked as a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Denver Post. He also wrote for Coronet, True, Liberty and other national magazines, RKO Studios and for television shows including Alfred Hitchcock Presents. While on special assignment to True Magazine in 1952, Cahn first discovered that all might not be as it seemed in regards to the information contained in Behind the Flying Saucers.

The introduction from the September 1952 issue of  True Magazine, entitled “Flying Saucers and the Mysterious Little Men” really sets the tone for what had gone before, and what was to come.

Had flying saucers manned by crews three feet tall actually landed on Earth? That was the question. This is how TRUE and Mr. Cahn found the answer.

For four months, across 4500 miles and five western states, I tracked down visitors from the planet Venus.
It was a fantastic assignment. The story I was to dig up if I could was the weirdest that any reporter could dream of having handed to him. If I found the Venusians, I couldn’t interview them, even if I knew how to speak their language. For they were dead, those strange little beings, from unknown causes – half of their number crisped by heat to a dark brown color.
They’d come out of the sky in flying saucers. My job was to bring their story down to earth.
I got it – their full inside story. And though I didn’t find the dead Venusians, I uncovered some rather fantastic living characters…

On the crest of a wave of public excitement about flying saucers in the spring of 1950 came news from the West that topped any of of the hundreds of saucer reports that had been recorded up to that time. Newspapers everywhere printed and reprinted the rumor that, in Denver, several businessmen had been shown little pieces of metal, small gears and a curious little radio set. These things, it was said, had been taken from a fallen flying saucer.

The metal was an unknown stuff that defied analysis. The gears- well, they looked like ordinary gears. The tubeless radio set, however, was really something; it beeped every fifteen minutes, exactly on the quarter hours, with a single brief ethereal tone-note that was seemingly a signal from outer space.

The entire 13 page article is a veritable tour de force of investigative journalism and should be required reading for anyone interested in the history of UFOlogy. The absolute highlight for me is how Cahn managed to get hold of one of the discs that allegedly came from one of the flying saucers. According to Newton, the disc had been subjected to over 150 exhaustive tests and could even withstand heat of 10,000 degrees. Cahn knew he needed to get his hands on one and have it subjected to independent tests. How he went about achieving his goal is a joy to behold. Cahn had already met with Newton previously, and arranged to meet him a second time at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. This time he brought with him his close friend and Sunday editor of the Chronicle, Scott Newhall. It was during this meeting that Newton showed them both the discs of unknown metal. Only allowing them a brief glimpse of the metallic treasure, Cahn nonetheless saw enough to know he had to think of something in order to achieve his goal. Think of something is exactly what he did!
First, he and his friend Scott got to work on creating copies of the discs they had been allowed a brief glimpse of. Working entirely from memory, they produced several copies of differing sizes and thickness using various metals. Once completed, Cahn kept the copies in his pocket everywhere he went; in order to give them an “authentic” worn look, similar to that of the originals. For the next part of his plan, Cahn employed the services of professional magician Hal McIntyre in order to try and switch one of the discs with one of Cahn’s fakes. For that to happen of course, Newton needed to produce the discs again and allow them to have a look. At first the plan didn’t work, primarily because Newton didn’t show the discs at the next meeting. However, Cahn most certainly was not one for giving up. He had Hal the magician teach him how to make the switch himself. Eventually, after many false starts Cahn was to get his chance.

“Newton was in great form that day. He was wearing a very pale gray flannel suit and somewhere in his travels he had picked up a deep tan. The way he handled himself I got to feeling that $35,000 was really a pretty chintzy offer.

There was the usual amount of backing and filling. Newton mulled the proposition over and gravely considered what his people would think. Occasionally he digressed long enough to spin some colorful bit of saucerian information, but by and large he was strictly the business man negotiating.

It was a shock, then, when he rummaged around in a coat pocket, hauled out the grainy handkerchief, spread the gears and disks on the desk and said, “I suppose you wanted to see these again.”

It was a bad moment. One look at Newton’s disks and it was a cinch that the substitutes were at best pretty unreasonable facsimilies. But it could have been a lot worse – I could have been caught diskless. Luckily, I did have the fake disks with me, bad as they were. I was still carrying them around, aging them in my pockets.

The most obvious thing wrong with my fakes was that they were much too thin – all but the one made with monel metal. It was halfway thick enough, but if it had seemed too heavy when it was made up, now, by secretly sorting it out and hefting it in my pocket, it seemed hopeless.

While I was wondering what to do, Newton was talking about a saucer that had been sighted over Africa. As swept away as he was by his new story he never once lost sight of the disks, handing over first one and then the other and placing them on his open handkerchief as they were returned.

I didn’t dare stall any longer. Not only was there the chance that any minute Newton would wrap up the disks and tuck them away, but I was beginning to get the shakes. I palmed the monel fake by gripping it with the fourth finger between the palm and second joint, and tried to remember what my friend McIntyre the magician, had told me. “Let me see one of those disks again, Mr. Newton,” I said. I guess I’m not cut out for this sort of thing because my voice sounded like I was going to be sick and when I took my hands from my pocket I could see the skin creases shine where the sweat was forming.

I took Newton’s disk between my thumb and forefinger, held it up to look at it, and then let it drop into my cupped hand. I gave a kind of feeble cough with the idea that if it clinked against the fake, the sound would be covered. There wasn’t any clink.

I went through the motions of hefting the disk in my hand although actually I was holding the two of them tightly palmed to keep them from getting mixed up. Big, single drops of icy sweat were slithering down my sides.

I just sat there for a second or two hefting away and trying to look as if I were pondering some deep interplanetary problem. Then, looking Newton right in the eye as McIntyre had told me, I let the monel fake slide into my other hand and passed it back to him. Keeping my eyes from flicking down at that fake disk as I handed it over was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Newton took it, plunked it down on the handkerchief without even glancing at it, and went right on with his story. All I had to do now was get his disk into my pocket without his noticing the move. McIntyre had warned me not to do it too soon and above all, not to look at my hand while I put it into my pocket. I didn’t, but it was a struggle. Then I tried to sit there and listen to Newton with that disk of his burning a hole right through the side of my suit. As hard as I tried not to sneak a look at the fake sitting there in the handkerchief alongside of Newton’s disk, I couldn’t stop it.

When I saw the two of them together I almost passed out. The fake was so bad it stuck out like an Eskimo at a Boston social tea party.”

Newton never noticed the switch and Cahn finally had an original “alien” disk. Thanks to another friend of his, Dr. Hobson of (wait for it!) the Stanford Research Institute, the disk was subjected to a barrage of tests and was found to be nothing more than pots-and-pans-grade aluminium that melted at an earthly 657 degrees Fahrenheit. Armed with this new found knowledge, Cahn made easy work of dismantling the hoax perpetrated by Newton and GeBauer but with more than a little help from Frank Scully.

As a result of JP Cahn’s marvellous exposé, several investors who had been conned by the pair came forward with their stories. For some, the 3 year statute of limitations had already expired and they were unable to make a case. For Herman Flader however, the millionaire businessman who had been taken for over $230,000, it hadn’t. The pair were arrested by the FBI and charged with conducting a confidence game, and conspiracy to commit a confidence game. The trial at the District Court in Denver lasted for several weeks, with the jury taking less than five hours to find the pair guilty on both counts. Result.

Back to the future
When one looks at the elements of the Aztec hoax and compares them to more recent events in the field of UFOlogy, the resemblance is startling. Every single aspect of the Aztec hoax has a counterpart in the modern day Core Story hoax. Even the main characters today can be uncannily matched to the characters of Newton, GeBauer and even Scully. The only thing that is different -so far- is the modern day hoaxers have not been caught.

Well, we know who they are and we know how they did it. In just a few more updates, so will you.

ROTTEN TO THE CORE: THE ROSWELL MYTH AND MJ-12 HOAX

MJ12 To explain the lack of any unambiguous (especially physical) evidence in the public domain to support the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (ETH), conventional wisdom in UFOlogy tells us this is because (depending on which version of the constantly changing story one wishes to believe) an alien spaceship (or two) and it’s three (or four) pilots, one of which survived for some time afterwards (or not), crashed near Roswell (or San Augustin), New Mexico in 1947 and was secretly recovered by the military without a trace.

Then, as the Myth goes, in response to what would arguably be one of the greatest scientific discovery of all time, the “temporary” government formed a shadow government with zero accountably to anybody else, including the successors to the President that formed it.  This alleged secret government was supposedly comprised of twelve well-placed officials known as the Majestic (or Majic) 12 (or MJ-12 for short).  It’s purpose was allegedly to suppress any and all evidence of ET visitation. That suppression would have required a worldwide coverup, 24/7, for over 60 years, without fail, sans a few minor “leaks” (sans any veritable evidence, of course).

Presumably this coverup was conducted because the public couldn’t handle the truth.  The truth being, the “disturbing” message that Jesus was an alien or that humans taste like chicken to our Reptilian Overlords from Zeta Reticuli perhaps?  Additionally, the private government’s motive was allegedly to secretly reverse engineer the captured alien technology in order to… well, apparently nobody’s really sure.

Pursuant to this claim is the notion that (according to Kit Green) at some point “in the 70’s and 80’s” (coincidentally around the same time the Myth was created), MJ-12 was disbanded and the “singularly unsuccessful” task of reverse engineering alien technology was transferred into the private sector.  This is where the supporters, if not as we suspect the very originators, of the “core story” – aided by their impressive (former) credentials and an apparently unlimited supply of anonymous “insider” sources - have been singularly successful in securing funding (to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars by some accounts) for their pseudoscientific “research.”

There is only one problem.  According to the historical record, none of the handful or so of individuals who were directly involved in the Roswell incident, and handled the debris in 1947, said at the time that there was anything “other worldly” about the “tinfoil, paper, tape, and sticks” that the rancher “Mac” Brazel , reportedly found.  Consequently, the incident rapidly faded into obscurity, sans a few (most likely completely unrelated) rumors over the years.  That is, until one of those individuals, Jesse Marcel , came forward (according to professional UFOlogist and proven charlatan Stanton Friedman) over 30 years later with a slightly different tale to tell in 1978.  All of a sudden, several more “witnesses” with even more fantastic stories to tell about what happened in 1947 started to appear, seemingly out of nowhere.

Next up…

[after telling Agent J that they're going to check the "hot sheets," Agent K pulls up to a newsstand and buys a pile of supermarket tabloids]

Agent J: *These* are the hot sheets?

Agent K: Best investigative reporting on the planet. But go ahead, read the New York Times if you want. They get lucky sometimes.
