FBI UFO Memo: Proof of Lazy Journalism

FBI UFO MemoA so-called “new” UFO FBI memo has recently started doing the rounds, both in UFOlogical circles and even in the mainstream media.

Sensational tabloid headlines such as “FBI: Aliens DID land on earth” and “Aliens Exist say real life X-Files” from the notorious Sun newspaper, along with “The memo that ‘proves aliens landed at Roswell’… released online by the FBI” from The Daily Mail have added to the plethora of websites proclaiming the truth has finally been revealed.

As is to be expected, those headlines and proclamations couldn’t be more wrong if they tried. The only truth revealed so far is that of one we’re used to in this field of research;

The truth doesn’t matter!

The FBI UFO memo in question, from  March 1950 and written by Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Guy Hottel to the FBI Director at the time, J. Edgar Hoover, is available to view and download from the FBI website. The text contained therein is reproduced below:

The following information was furnished to SA [censored] by [censored]

An investigator for the Air Forces stated that three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico. They were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots.

According to Mr. [censored] informant, the saucers were found in New Mexico due to the fact that the Government has a very high-powered radar set-up in that area and it is believed the radar interferes with the controlling mechanism of the saucers.

No further evaluation was attempted by SA [censored] concerning the above.

This author has to wonder if journalists of the tabloid variety have lost their basic reading capacity, surely one of the requisite skills needed for such a profession? The first line of the memo states in clear terms that the information was given to the Air Force investigator by someone else. “The following information was furnished to SA [censored] by [censored]”. Further down the memo, we see the person who told the Air Force investigator was also not a first-hand witness, having received the information from yet another source! “According to Mr. [censored] informant”.

Far from being proof of anything, the memo is nothing more sensational than Guy Hottel reporting information as told to him several times removed from the original source.  The last line of the memo serves to ram home the insignificance of the information, when it states the AF investigator attempted no further evaluation. He clearly hadn’t been born the day before.

You will also note that despite headlines to the contrary, there is no mention of Roswell contained in the memo whatsoever. The incident the information refers to IS in New Mexico, but at Aztec, not Roswell.

The Reality Uncovered article Play it again, Scam from February 2009 deals specifically with the Aztec hoax, but in a nutshell the story refers to an elaborate con game perpetrated by Silas Newton and Leo GeBauer. Some people have also touted this memo to be new information, but once again this is flat wrong.

The same day the Aztec article named above was published, in February of 2009, Reality Uncovered administrator “Access Denied” refers to this exact same FBI memo in a post on the forum. Not only does his post prove the memo is far from new, it also shows how the information contained therein had already been debunked years earlier! (Emphasis added)

One particular aspect of the Aztec hoax I find interesting is this…

[from Dave Thomas’ page]

http://www.nmsr.org/aztec.htm

On May 31st and June 1st, 1998, on the nationally-syndicated radio programs Dreamland and The Art Bell Show, noted UFO researcher Linda Moulton Howe described a secret FBI memo from March 22nd, 1950, written to J. Edgar Hoover himself. Memo author Guy Hottel, of SAC, described an investigator’s report of a flying saucer recovery in New Mexico, with mention of three saucers, three-foot tall bodies, metallic cloth, and bandaged alien bodies. The crash was supposedly due to interference from high-powered radar. But all of these elements (saucers, aliens, cloth and tape, radar site) have been firmly traced to the yarns spun by our two swindlers! William Moore even traced how the story got from Silas Newton to J. Edgar Hoover: Newton told George Koehler (employed at radio station KMYR in Denver), who told Morley Davies, who told Ford dealers Murphy and van Horn, who told auto dealer Fick, who told the editor of the Kansas City Wyandotte Echo. By that time, Koehler had become “Coulter,” just like a game of “gossip” (or a game of “pi”)! This article was picked up in the news, where it caught the interest of the OSI. The OSI agent passed the story on to Guy Hottel of the FBI, and he gave the 8th-hand story to Hoover.

So, if you see any stories proclaiming proof that the aliens are here because the FBI said so, send them to Reality Uncovered for a history lesson!

British UFO Files: Over 8500 new pages released by The National Archives

The National ArchivesThe National Archives yesterday released their largest batch of UFO information to date, with over 8500 new pages now available to download at their website.

Following on from six previous releases, the last one being in August last year (2010), the latest files cover the years 2000-2005 and contain information regarding sightings and reports and document “how UFOs became a global issue, discussed by the highest levels of government around the world, including the United Nations, the US Central Intelligence Agency and Britain’s House of Lords.”

The files have been sorted into categories and are supplemented by a Highlights Guide and a Research Guide by Dr. David Clarke. it is largely thanks to the efforts of Dr. Clarke and other researchers that the Ministry of Defence were persuaded to release their UFO files starting back in May 2008 – an action that has since been replicated by other Governments and agencies throughout the world.

The Categories

• Files released under the Freedom of Information Act

• Parliamentary interest in UFOs

• Government Policy on UFOs

• UFO sightings and Reports

• Sighting reports by geographical location

Help I’ve been abducted

One of the more amusing reports contained in the files concerns a London man who believed he had been abducted by aliens. The man had apparently witnessed an aircraft hovering above his house one evening in October 1999.

He awoke the next morning and realised he had experienced some missing time during the night.

“The MoD responded to his letter stating the aircraft was likely to have been an airship and that the clocks had gone back an hour that night which would account for him gaining an hour”.

[File DEFE 24/1999 (p106)]

Another report details a student hoax from 1967 which involved Four police forces, bomb disposal units, the army and the MoD’s intelligence branch. Engineering students from Farnborough Technical College had come up with the idea as part of their rag-day celebrations. [File DEFE 24/1986]

Close to home

One of the files grabbed my attention, when I realised it dealt with my very first UFO sighting as a twelve year old back in 1978! Some friends and I witnessed what appeared to be something burning high up in the atmosphere. A lot of people gathered outside in the street to see but no one had any idea what it was. Being young and naive, we decided it must have something to do with aliens and thought no more about it. Actually that’s not true, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve often wondered what it was but thought I’d never find out. Thanks to this latest release, it turns out the sighting can be put down to space “junk” re-entering the earth’s atmosphere and causing a flurry of UFO reports in the process. [DEFE 24/2048 (p108-138)]

It’s a conspiracy!

Along with the “usual” standard UFO reports contained in the files, there are some that will give plenty of ammunition to the conspiracy theorists who believe there has been a cover-up by governments around the world with regard to the UFO phenomena.

The HMS Manchester UFO

One of these such cases details an alleged UFO sighting by crew members of HMS Manchester and other Royal Navy ships during an exercise off the coast of Norway in 1998/99. In a letter to the Ministry of Defence on 24th September 2002, (now deceased) Lord Hill-Norton writes:

Dear Lord Bach,
You will know of my keen interest in reports of incidents involving unidentified aerial
craft, especially where such incidents involve the military, and are self-evidently
therefore of defence significance.

I have recently been informed of one such incident which involved HMS Manchester.
Apparently the ship encountered an unidentified craft during a naval exercise, with
several hundred people in Manchester and other HM ships witnessing the event. At
the same time, personnel on a Norwegian naval ship tracked the object on radar and
were openly discussing the incident on the Operations Room communications
network.

The ex-RN person who has recounted this incident is unsure of the precise date on
which it occured, but is reasonably certain that it fell between either 26th October and
6th November 1998 or 8th February and 3rd March 1999.
I ask, therefore, that you arrange for HMS Manchester’s log to be searched for
reference to this incident, and for copies of any such pages to be sent to me.

Aside from the fact the ex Royal Navy person could not remember if the incident happened a couple of months before or after the Christmas of only four years previous, it is surprising that mention of the alleged incident had not made it into the mainstream already. Several hundred witnesses is a lot more than is usually the case for UFO sightings and the odds on them all having kept quiet will be very high indeed.

The fuel for this latest conspiracy fire is provided by the answer Lord Hill-Norton received in a reply from Lord Bach at the MoD almost a month later. In it Lord Bach states (in part):

You asked that HMS MANCHESTER’s log [for the periods requested] be scrutinised for references to
unidentified aerial craft sighted by the ship’s company. No such references have been
found in any of the log entries which are available.

Unfortunately, I have to add the rider that HMS MANCHESTER’s log covering the
period 1 Feb until sunrise on 13 February 1999 was lost in Bodo, Norway, during the
deployment. The log was positioned, as is the custom, at the head of the gangway when
the vessel was alongside in port, and an unusually strong gust of wind carried it
overboard. [snip]

The log becoming lost due to a gust of wind is unfortunate. Quite unsurprisingly, this is now being grasped at as evidence that incidents like this are being covered up. The field of UFOlogy is already populated by people who will use anything remotely tangible in order to drive their message home, so the lost log certainly won’t help matters.

However, there is more to this story than some UFO proponents might have you believe. During the course of the search for HMS Manchester’s log, the Directorate Air Staff (DAS) wrote the following on 30th Spetember 2002 in reply to a request for assistance:

As DAS leads on the subject of ‘UFO’, we have checked our database to see if there was any report
made of an incident at sea between 26th October and 6 November 1998 or 8 February and 3 March
1999. We have found no trace of any such incident and would, therefore, be very grateful if you would
undertake appropriate research.

One would expect at least a passing reference in the database for an event that was supposedly witnessed by hundreds. In the “Loose Minutes” communication from DAS to the Ministerial Correspondence Unit, we see that upon discovering the loss of the log, the Commanding Officer of HMS Manchester was contacted by DAS and he “has no recollection of any unusual activity during this or any other depolyment by the MANCHESTER while under his command, that could be construed as involving ‘unidentified aerial craft’.” The same information was given to Lord Hill-Norton in the letter quoted further above. The Loose Minutes document also gives further information regarding the two date ranges given by the anonymous ex-Royal Navy person that triggered Lord Hill-Norton’s request in the first place.

The periods to which Lord Hill-Norton refer cover two seperate naval exercises, between 26 Oct and
6 Nov 98, and 8 Feb and 3 Mar 99. A holding reply was sent by the Minister pending
examination of the relevant log entries by CinCFleet. This search has now been completed.
No reference to any unidentified aerial craft has been found in the ship’s log
for the specified periods. Unfortunately, however, the log for the first part of Feb 99
was lost overboard at Bodo in Norway during the second exercise. The available
record therefore does not begin until 08.26 hours on 13 Feb 99. It is nevertheless well
documented elsewhere that HMS MANCHESTER left Portsmouth on 8 Feb 99 and carried out
weapon training on passage to Bodo in Norway, where she arrived on 12 Feb.

One has to wonder about the motives of the witness who reported the alleged sighting to Lord Hill-Norton in the first place. It was well known in UK UFOlogy circles that the Lord had an active interest in UFOs, having written about them and asked questions about them in Parliament. That no one else – out of hundreds of multi-national witnesses – has ever come forward about the alleged incident is very damaging to the credibility of the “case”, as is the apparent poor short term memory of the witness in question. A UFO incident would certainly stick in the minds of most people. Perhaps this particular witness saw something much less exciting than a UFO fly-by? A log book being blown overboard by a gust of wind, for example. [File DEFE 24/2092 p225]

RendleSHAM Forest Scam: files destroyed

Groan. This is another that is going to run and run. It transpires that a collection of Defence Intelligence files from 1980-82, including files pertaining to the RendleSHAM “incident”, had been destroyed. As if that wasn’t bad enough, other files from the surrounding years had survived.

Officials from MoD warned that if what it called this “apparent anomaly in the records” were made public “it could be interpreted to mean that a deliberate attempt had been made to eradicate the records covering this incident”.

Quite. [File DEFE 2026 p182]

Whichever side of the fence you are on, these files are certainly worth the download. They are available for free for one month, after which a small fee applies.

“Mr. Non-Lethal” Discloses Aviary’s Most Closely Guarded Secret?

Followers of this blog and RU’s investigations in general may recall that last year around this time, Ryan posted a fascinating interview with John Alexander entitled Mr. Non-Lethal With Many Hands in Many Pots and noted with some frustration that…

John was evasive and ignored a number of the questions – in a few cases the most important ones.

I, as well as a number of others I suspect, agreed that Ryan had just cause to be highly skeptical of John’s answers (or more precisely, the lack thereof) and in fact I had some much harsher words of my own for him as noted in the forum thread linked to in that article for those who may be interested. I was particularly critical of his support of the Roswell Myth.

That Was Then, This is Now

Since then John’s anticipated new book UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies, and Realities has now been published and Popular Mechanics has published a brief interview with him that highlights John’s “disclosure” of the fabled “working group”…

Col. John Alexander Plants UFO Doubts in New Book: Exclusive Interview

Q: Why was the Advanced Theoretical Physics Group organized, and what did it accomplish?

A: We thought there was probably a black program on UFOs somewhere in government, and those involved would probably be willing to work with a group that had appropriate clearances and could help disseminate information. What we found out, of course, was that there was no program and that information collection was pretty much ad hoc.

I’ve now read the book and while I believe it falls far short of full disclosure of the Aviary’s true motivations and the extent of their actions, and perhaps could be criticized as an attempt to restore some credibility to some of the individuals involved in what is affectionately referred to here at RU as Scammers Inc, I will say this…

Buy this book!

I am encouraged by the all too rare move to intellectual honesty that Mr. Alexander expresses through his authoritative rejection of a number of popular UFOlogical “sacred cows” including Roswell, MJ-12 and Area 51 and I think this may turn out to be an important book… or not. At the very least it makes for some good entertainment and presents a formidable challenge for those who wish to continue to profit from the “reality” of a vast UFO conspiracy. If anybody could have got their foot in the door if one existed, I can’t say that I know of anybody with a more appropriate background more determined to do so. The introduction from Burt Rutan and commentary by Tom Clancy is worth the price of admission alone.

That said, John, we need to talk.

From the prologue…

UFOs are real! With no prevarication or qualification of terms, there are physical objects of unknown origin that do transit our universe. The evidence that supports those statements is simply overwhelming. That evidence includes both hard data collected via multispectral sensors and from high-quality eyewitnesses that are neither misreporting facts nor delusional.

And…

Any so-called skeptic that states, “There is no hard evidence to support the existence of UFOs,” is simply wrong! What he or she really means is that they haven’t taken the time to seriously review the data, and most likely you can infer that they aren’t about to start now.

It should be noted only one sentence of the 1976 Tehran case (a teletype sent by the DAO in Tehran as a matter of routine foreign intelligence) that was given as an example of material the ATP had “exclusive” access to was initially classified and that was at the CONFIDENTIAL level because it involved sources and methods and if cases like Bentwaters (Rendlescam Forest), Cash-Landrum, the Coyne Incident (Mansfield, Ohio), the Phoenix Lights, Gulf Breeze (Bruce Maccabee), and Malmstrom (Robert Hastings and Salas) he discusses in the chapter “REAL CASES AND HARD DATA” is the best evidence John has, I’m afraid I see nothing new here in the way of “data” to review.

No one has to convince this skeptic UFOs are real! I already know sometimes people (myself included) see things in the sky they can’t identify but where’s the evidence that establishes UFOs “transit our universe”? To his credit, John acknowledges there’s no physical (“multispectral sensor”) evidence of objects of unknown origin entering and exiting our atmosphere from outer space but then he handwaves it away with the following rationalization…

At a minimum it appears that these enigmatic objects have a capability to manipulate physical reality in manners that we have yet to comprehend. That does not make them less real, just more difficult to explain.

Well John that kind of does, if they can be picked up by our sensors (e.g. eyes) but not any others, seems to me it’s either not really an object of unknown origin or it’s not really there. But, I digress…

I do like this book. It’s definitely a step in the right direction and John should be congratulated for it.

Did UFOs Disable Minuteman Missiles at Malmstrom AFB in 1967?

RU member Tim Hebert has posted a summary of his independent analysis of the Malmstrom incident on his blog that followers of the recent heated debate between UFO researcher Robert Hastings and James Carlson, son of Eric Carlson, one of the two launch officer on duty at Echo Flight at the time of the shutdown on the morning of March 16, 1967, should find interesting.  Here we have what can be considered an expert opinion on the matter given Tim’s experience with the weapons system in question.  This should help guide us as to which version of events makes the most sense; that of former launch officer Robert Salas who wasn’t at Echo Flight but claims UFOs caused the shutdown and the Air Force covered it up, or that of former launch officers Eric Carlson and Walt Figel, both of whom were on duty at Echo Flight at the time and claim they don’t believe UFOs caused the shutdown.

Tim begins his analysis with the following background…

“When it comes to the existence of UFOs, I have to admit that I’m rather agnostic about the subject.  Its simple for me, over the past 53 years, I’ve never seen a UFO.  I don’t rule the phenomenon out completely, but I’m of the mind frame that you have to “show me the saucer” or better yet, I need to see one with my own eyes. The case of the Malmstrom AFB UFO incident that allegedly happened in 1967 caught my attention about a year ago.  Malmstrom was my first Air Force assignment, stationed there from 1981 to 1985.  I was assigned to the 490th Strategic Missile Squadron as a Minuteman II launch officer.  My primary alert facilities where November-01, Lima-01 and Kilo-01.  During my time on station, I never saw a UFO, nor did I hear from other alert crew members that they had seen one.  Curiously, I had never heard of any stories about UFOs disabling ICBM.  We would talk about the myths and legends surrounding our “haunted” Launch Facility, A-05, but UFOs weren’t in our lexicon.”

A UFO Mysteriously Causes 10 Minuteman ICBMs to Drop Off Alert

Tim recaps the account of events as presented by Hastings and Salas et. al. and proposes the following explanation…

“UFOs are talked about or alluded to, but none of the principle characters of Hastings’ story sees or reports any strange objects flying in the sky or hovering over an ICBM launch site. The UFO hypothesis remains seriously in doubt. I propose a different set of hypothesis based upon the Minuteman I’s complexity and the reporting of UFO sightings starting in January of 1967.

1.The ten missiles in Echo Flight shut down due to a power system anomaly, though unusual in the number of involved LFs, similar incident had occurred in 1966, on a smaller scale, at another 10th Strategic Missile Squadron Flight.

2. The involvement of UFOs started out as a practical joke due to the past reports of sighting by the local population and subsequently published reports in the local newspapers and talked about for three months prior to the 16 March 1967 Echo Flight incident.”

An Interview With Malmstrom AFB Witness Eric Carlson

For those of you following along with this story (or for those of you who are just coming along now), I have the pleasure to introduce you to one of the men who has been at the epicenter of a storm within the Ufology community.

It has been a longstanding legend within Ufology that a UFO was sighted over the Silos at Echo Flight and Oscar flight, and that those UFOs were related to the electronic malfunction and shutdown of the nuclear missiles protecting the United States of America from the Communist threat.

The major source of these stories has been a man who alleges that he was a witness to at least Oscar flight, and that he has insight knowledge about events at Echo flight.

You can read many of his claims at the CUFON website, or you can check out the book published by Robert Salas called Faded Giant, with James Klotz listed as contributor. Robert Salas and Robert Hastings are actively promoting this book, and speaking at an upcoming National Press Conference in Washington DC on September 27th.

The Interview with Retired AF Captain Eric Carlson

After we were contacted by James Carlson, and provided with information from his research and interviews, we carefully reviewed the claims by Salas and Hastings, and eventually decided two things. There were two primary witnesses to the Echo Flight event – Walt Figel and Eric Carlson. These two men were in E-Flight LCC, watched the systems fail, and responded in the manner they were trained to respond. No one out there – no one- would know better than these two men what really happened in the control room on that day.

Walt Figel provided his feedback to James, which we’ve published previously on this blog. He does not want to be a part of the debate, and wishes to be left alone after providing his final statement, so we will respect that. However, Captain Eric Carlson remains an excellent witness, and told his son that he would be willing to talk to anyone who is truly interested in the truth.

So – I contacted the retired Captain and he agreed to the interview. It is provided below. I have only edited grammatical or spelling errors, but left his responses exactly how he provided them to me. Without further ado, I would like to introduce you to Echo Flight witness Eric Carlson.

Question and Answer

Ryan: According to the stories, on Thursday Morning, March 16, 1967, you (Captain Eric Carlson) and First Lieutenant Walt Figel were serving as the Echo-Flight Missile Crew in the E-Flight LCC. According to Salas, “more than one report came in from the security patrols and maintenance crews that they had seen UFOs.”

According to Salas, a UFO was even sighted directly above one of the E-Flight silos. At an estimated 08:30, Salas claims that an alarm sounded reporting to you and Figel that one of the Minuteman missiles you were responsible for had become inoperable.

First – lets touch on this claim. Could you describe what you remember about this specific part of the story? Was there such an alarm at all and was it unusual?

Eric: There were no reports called in to either me or Lt Figel on the morning of March 16, 1967.  The report that we had lost ten missiles is accurate.  It was not uncommon to lose one missile or even two to no-go status, it was unheard of to lose all ten.

I recall that both Lt Figel and I were Kept rather busy completing our checklists, which included calls to the wing command post and maintenance control.  Shortly after completing the check lists we received a call from the senior controller at SAC headquarters, a general.   He wanted to know my status and I informed him that E-2 thru E-11 were in no-go status.  He asked me if I was sure and how did I know they would not launch.

I advised him that my tech order indicated they would not launch.  I am sure he was concerned because our targets would have to be covered by someone else.  He then asked it E-1 would launch and I advised him that that was the launch control center where we were.  I recall wanting to tell him that I sure as hell hoped it wouldn’t.

The Alleged UFO Sighting and System Failure

Ryan: The stories claim that when Figel called the security guard on the surface, the guard reported that no maintenance had taken place and that a UFO had been hovering over the silo. Do you recall Figel making this phonecall, and did he tell you that anyone on the other end of the line mentioned anything about a UFO?

Eric: There was no call, at any time, telling us about any UFOs.

Ryan: Reportedly, the entire flight of ICBMs went into “no-go” status – and once you and Figel completed the checklist procedure you learned that all systems were offline due to a guidance and control systems malfunction. Could you elaborate on the accuracy of that claim?

Eric: The voice reporting system did report a guidance and control system malfunction.

Ryan: Did either you or Figel (or anyone else) eventually determine what caused the system malfunction? Or was there any speculation? In other words, did you eventually receive any follow-up information about what the engineers learned about the malfunction?

Eric: I don’t know if anyone eventually determined the cause.  I have not read the report of investigation.  There was no way for either Figel or myself to make that determination and there was no follow-up from engineers.  Any report they made would have been classified and I had no need to know.

The After-Effects of the Experience

Ryan: According to the story, when Captain Don Crawford’s crew relieved you and Walt, you were “still visibly shaken by what had occurred.” Do you recall having such an emotional reaction to the event, and if so, why?

Eric: I do not recall being “shaken” by what had occurred.  I do not believe Lt Figel nor I had any emotional reaction other than perhaps surprise.

Ryan: Do you have an insight or experiences to report related to the reported Oscar Flight incident where allegedly another UFO was sighted which reportedly sent the missiles into “no-go” status?

Eric: The event at Echo became what could be referred to as the talk of the town.  Everyone knew about it and many crew members kidded me about it.  There was never any talk, at any time, about a similar event at Oscar.  I can only conclude from that that it never happened.

Ryan: Why would crew members kid you about a malfunction – was it because it was rare for all of the silos to go down at once? During the jokes and discussions with other crew members, did anyone mention anything about a UFO being sighted above the silo when the malfunction occurred?

Eric: The crew members of the 10th SMS were a tight group.  We were the first minuteman squadron activated and did a lot together.  When soomeone in the squadron had difficulties, that were not related to their skills or qualifications, kidding took place.  At no time were UFOs mentioned to me.

The Follow-Up Air Force Investigation

Ryan: CUFOS reports that subsequent investigations by Boeing engineers turned up no explanation for what could have caused the shutdown, and some speculated that only a high energy electromagnetic pulse (EMP) could have entered the shielded system to cause the failure. Were you aware of any of the subsequent investigations after the shutdown of Echo and/or Oscar, and are able to shed more light on what was actually determined?

Eric: I have no information that sheds light on the incident other than the official investigation or the Echo incident.  To the best of my knowledge there was no report or investigation of any Oscar incident.

Ryan: Had you ever had any conversations with the security guards or staff who allegedly saw the UFO hovering over the silo? What, if anything, did you learn from those conversations about the alleged sighting(s)?

Eric: I have never had any discussion with security personnel regarding UFOs.

Ryan: Do you know if Walter did? According to the stories, he was the one that answered the phone. Of course, you were right there, so I’m sure you would have known if someone told him a UFO had been sighted?

Eric: I am sure that if Figel had any discussions with security personnel about UFOs that he would have mentioned it to me.

Ryan: According to many former USAF personnel, the USAF allegedly frowned upon the reporting or even internal acknowledgement of such UFO events and/or sightings. Is this how you felt while you were serving in the USAF?

Eric: I never felt constrained in any way regarding reporting any unusual activities around missile sites.  In fact, I believe we were encouraged to report unusual incidents or events.

Ryan: Finally – I would like to give you an opportunity to share whether you were ever contacted or interviewed by Hastings, Salas or any other Ufologists before, and your perspective on the stories that they’ve put out there about the events that occurred at Echo Flight and Oscar Flight.

Eric: I was contacted by both Salas and Hastings and would neither confirm or deny anything they told me.  I really didn’t want to get involved in a pissing contest with either.  Hastings told me he had written a book and I told him that sounded interesting.  He sent me a copy and while I cannot attest or comment on anything other than the Malmstrom incident I found that particular incident full of errors.  A producer for some UFO TV series contacted me one time and a reporter from the Great Fall newspaper also contacted me one time.  There were no follow-ups from either.

Ryan: This is interesting! Hastings only called to talk to you after he’d written the book? Or was he calling you while he was writing his book in order to confirm information he’d learned from Salas?

Eric: Hastings called after he had written the book.  I don’t know what his motive was.

Final Words

We’ve learned recently that Robert Salas was recently interviewed on Coast to Coast, and repeated many of the claims that these two witnesses report are not true. James Carlson has been working diligently and honestly to uncover and report the truth about the Echo Flight incident that his father was a primary witness to. We can only hope that in the spirit of truth and unbiased reporting, that Coast to Coast will consider interviewing James and his father Eric Carlson, for a glimpse of the real story.

I would also recommend to our readers, that if you do decide to purchase and read Faded Giant, that you take what Salas has reported with a grain of salt, because unfortunately the real witnesses at Echo Flight do not support his claims.

Malmstrom AFB Missile/UFO Incident – Part III

In part 3 of this Malmstrom AFB UFO series (there will be four parts in total for anyone who is wondering), I am going to provide a brief update as to the recent testimony of Eric Carlson. Anyone familiar with the alleged Malmstrom UFO incident knows that Captain Eric Carlson, along with First Lieutenant Walt Figel were key witnesses in the events that took place at Echo Flight on March 16, 1967.

It’s important to understand the scope of what is involved in this analysis. For some reason, a lot of readers – particularly Ufologists and/or various UFO researchers – are under the impression that the intent of this report is to debunk any and all claims of UFO activity at nuclear missile sites around the country during this time period.

The reality is that James Carlson’s research, interviews and analysis is centered upon one thing and one thing only; proving that this particular incident occurred exactly as his father, a primary witness, described it as occurring – not as Robert Hastings described it in his book, and not as Robert Salas has detailed in his account.

Since our tagline here at RealityUncovered is that we are passionate about the truth, then this is an easy enough situation to get a good grasp on and shake out the truth. There are real witnesses and real people involved. In the previous posts, you’ve seen feedback from Walt Figel that states unequivocally that he was not aware of any UFO involvement in the Echo Flight malfunction. It seems inconceivable that this primary witness statement could so directly contradict the claims that Robert Salas and Robert Hastings have made regarding Echo Flight. Yet it does. This also calls into question the accuracy and veracity of Salas’ claims regarding Oscar Flight events as well.

James Contacts His Father

The second primary witness to events within the facility, Captain Eric Carlson, responded to direct queries from his son James recently (Aug 25, 2010) with a response that really leaves very little doubt as to what he reports happened at Echo Flight. The reason James Carlson decided to contact his father again was because he noticed that people were questioning the lack of input from Eric Carlson, James’ own father. James wrote (in the RU forum):

“Many peoplehave asked why my father hasn’t been interviewed to the extent that Col. Walt Figel was. I asked him, therefore, to give me some kind of a written statement. It’s actually pretty fun to read; if anybody believes that this statement is not from my father, then ask him yourself. As Salas has repeatedly insisted that my father confirms his version of this event, I think it’s necessary to examine the contents of this statement.

To enable a fuller understanding of my Dad’s communication with me, I’d like to point out a few facts first:

(1) Salas says my father confirms his story;

(2) throughout my interest in this event, Robert Hastings has repeatedly stated that my father told him I have severe mental problems that have worried my family, implying that the arguments I’ve made, and the issues I’ve examined cannot be trusted as a result of these mental problems; I am seriously considering a lawsuit directed at Robert Hastings for slander and defamation of character;

(3) critics, particularly Robert Hastings, have suggested that my father has memory problems, and that his testimony, to a great extent, cannot be trusted for that reason. With these facts in mind, I ask that you please give his statement the attention it deserves”

A Statement From Primary Witness – Captain Eric Carlson

Eric responded to his son’s query as follows (emphasis mine).

“Let me start by stating that, as best as I can recall, my only contact with Salas and Hastings has been on the phone. I did tell Salas that he could release my name to whomever he wished, don’t know why he needed my permission. I have talked to a newspaper writer in Great Falls, several years ago, and a TV producer from one of those UFO shows. With both these individuals I denied any knowledge of any UFO’s at Malmstrom. In addition, I stated that there was no, repeat no, incident at Oscar flight as Salas maintains. The man is either lying or delusional.

My onlly contact with Hastings was a call I received from him regarding his book. I stated that his book sounded interesting and he later sent me a copy which I read and gave away to Gabriel or Kier. At no time did I mention anyones mental status; yours, mine, his, or Salas’, although in retrospect I could comment on Salas’.

My memory is quite good regarding the events at Malmstrom and there is no doubt in my mind that there were no reports of UFO’s and no incident at Oscar flight. I will be willing to discuss this with anyone who is truly interested in the facts.

Be sure and let me know when you write something else as your e-book was factual and interesting.”

Following up this statement from his father – I decided to take Mr. Carlson up on that offer. As of tonight, I’ve interviewed retired Captain Eric Carlson myself. Unless his father has shared the interview with him, even James himself is unaware of the answers his father provided in response to my direct questioning about this event. James requested that he be left completely out of the loop and unconnected to the interview, as he expected opponents and critics to accuse him of tampering or otherwise affecting the witness. I was impressed by this, and moved forward with coming up with questions for Eric. I will be publishing this final interview in the last update – part 4 – of this series.

In closing I would like to refer readers to a press release that James Carlson issued on September 6th, directly taking Hastings and Salas to task for their upcoming National Press Conference to be held on September 27th at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. It is certainly the hope of James Carlson, and probably the hope of readers out there who are also passionate about the truth – that maybe, with any luck, there will be a reporter present who has read Captain Eric Carlson’s statement, and Walt Figel’s statements earlier in this blog, and will ask Robert Hastings and Robert Salas direct questions at the National Press Conference about those witness statements.

Hynek, J. Allen – UFOs Merit Scientific Study

Hynek, J. Allen, in “UFOs Merit Scientific Study” – a letter submitted to Science Magazine in 1966 – wrote the following passage.

“It is unequivocally false to say that UFOs are never reported by scientifically trained people. Some of the best, most coherent reports come from such witnesses,” Citing examples he said “Four of the sightings were made by professional astronomers while on duty at their observatories, five more by technical specialists, including one reported by the associate director of one of the nation’s ranking technical laboratories. . . All but three involved brilliantly illuminated craft maneuvering in the air.”

This letter, and Hynek’s subsequent change of heart on the matter of UFOs, is as relevant today as it was in 1966.

Many people reading this, faced with the ridiculous nature and the overwhelmingly insane claims by so many people online and offline, usually choose to live their lives in relative isolation from the UFO community. Many people who have sightings or experiences report that those experiences had a significant impact on their lives and their sense of reality. In fact, Dr. Hynek himself started out as a skeptic when he was first asked by the Air Force to take part in Blue Book. It was his careful, scientific analysis of the Blue Book cases that led him to believe that within the noise, there was in fact a signal.

In the Forward that he wrote for Jacques Vallee’s book, “Challenge to Science – UFO Enigma” Dr. Hynek described the field back in 1966. Surprisingly, many readers today, over three decades later, will recognize what Hynek describes.

“As an astronomer, I probably would never have approached the subject had I not been officially asked to do so. Over the past eighteen years I have acted as a scientific consultant to the U.S. Air Force on the subject of unidentified flying objects-UFO’s. As a consequence of my work on the voluminous air force files and, to a greater extent, of personal investigation of many puzzling cases and interviews with witnesses of good repute, I have long been aware that the subject of UFO’s could not be dismissed as mere nonsense. Nonsense is present, to be sure, and misidentification of otherwise familiar objects that many sincere people report as UFO’s. But is there not a “signal” in the “noise,” a needle in the haystack? Is it not precisely our role to try to isolate the valid from the nonsensical? By carefully working through tons of pitchblende, Madame Curie isolated a tiny amount of radium-but the significance of that minute quantity was world–shaking.”

Dr. Hynek was primarily a professor and astronomer, but it was his work as a scientific advisor to the U.S. Air Force for which is he most remembered and famous. Under Project Sign, Project Grudge and Project Blue Book, Hynek analyzed case after case – probably witnessing a volume of accounts and learning of events most of us would never have the time to review. Even after the Air Force dropped Blue Book, Hynek continued on in his pursuit of the truth behind the UFO enigma by analyzing trace evidence left by UFOs.

Hynek was an intelligent guy. With a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Yerkes Observatory, he understood more than most the significance of UFO events and the many physical and natural events and phenomenon that could easily explain most UFO events. In his work with the Air Force, he would do his best to explain a sighting based on known astronomical objects. When he started this work – Hynek was very much a skeptic and worked hard at debunking the many UFO reports sent his way.

However, over time and faced with occasional reports that he couldn’t legitimately convince himself were bogus, the scientist in Dr. Hynek came out. He recognized a true scientific mystery buried within the hundreds and thousands of erroneous reports. He saw reports by very credible and professional witnesses, and couldn’t explain them away. He polled 44 astronomer colleagues and 11 percent came back saying that they’d certainly witnessed objects in the night sky that they couldn’t explain with science, yet were afraid of being ridiculed for reporting them.

In an article Hynek published in the 1953 edition of the Journal of the Optical Society of America, he wrote:

“Ridicule is not part of the scientific method, and people should not be taught that it is. The steady flow of reports, often made in concert by reliable observers, raises questions of scientific obligation and responsibility. Is there … any residue that is worthy of scientific attention? Or, if there isn’t, does not an obligation exist to say so to the public—not in words of open ridicule but seriously, to keep faith with the trust the public places in science and scientists?”

By the 1970s, Hynek and Dr. Jacques Vallee were lockstep in their belief that the UFO phenomenon was not an extraterrestrial “nuts and bolts” phenomenon, but instead was a phenomenon created “closer to home.”

“There are just too many things going against this theory. To me, it seems ridiculous that super intelligences would travel great distances to do relatively stupid things like stop cars, collect soil samples, and frighten people. I think we must begin to re-examine the evidence. We must begin to look closer to home.”

The UN Meeting about UFOs

For those of you who followed our recent expose of Richard Theilmann and his tales of attending a UN conference on UFOs, you may be interested to know (if you didn’t know already), that there was, in fact, a very real meeting at the United Nations in 1978 when Dr. Allen Hynek, Dr. Jacques Vallee, and Dr. Claude Poher presented a speech to the UN General Assembly on the subject of UFOs in an effort to use the UN as an authority, since the United States Air Force had shunned any further review of the phenomenon.

What were some of the events that Dr. Hynek believed actually took place, and could not be explained – as reported by credible witnesses? He reported these to the Joint Symposium of the American Institute of Aeronautics in 1975.

–> materialization and dematerialization
–> shape changes
–> noiseless hovering in the Earth’s gravitational field
–> accelerations that – for an appreciable mass – require energy sources far beyond present capabilities
–> the psychic effects on percipients
–> purported telepathic communications

One thing that is certain is that after the Air Force killed the official study into the phenomenon, as of the mid 1970′s, both Hynek and Vallee ramped their own research into high gear. I’m not convinced that the true details of their work have ever been made public, although the odds are very good that Vallee carried the torch well into the 80s and 90s. Despite his claims to no longer be involved in Ufology, you will find a statement here and there to the media, and a hint that he is actively testing and researching a phenomenon that he and Hynek both viewed as a sort of “control system.”

It seems fitting to close with the words from Hynek himself.

“Certainly no progress can be made without scientific study. Unfortunately, as the authors point out, scientists, “draped with dignity,” have often refused to study the reports. The fact of the matter is that many of my colleagues who have undraped their dignity long enough to take a hard look at the reports have joined the growing ranks of the puzzled scientists: they privately indicate serious interest in the phenomenon but publicly they choose, like the subject itself, to remain unidentified; they are unwilling to expose themselves to the raillery and banter that go with it.

It is to them in particular, and to all who foster the true Galilean spirit, that this book will be of greatest value. They grope and seek, examining even those ideas that seem fanciful and strange, for they know how strange and fanciful the term “nuclear energy” would have been to a physicist one hundred years ago. They are ready to accept a new challenge to science.”

While Hynek’s words and intentions were valiant in 1966, I ask you this – are the intentions and activities of those scientists still as honorable and filled with good intentions as they were so many decades ago?

Why Do People Join Cults?

Are you new to the field of Ufology? Have you been attracted by one fantastic story or another? Or maybe you’ve been experiencing some strange events or phenomenon in your life and you have questions. Before you dive too deeply into this strange, seedy world – I would like to issue all travelers a caution and some advice. The question we’re going to answer today is why do people join cults?

The Nature of Ufology Today

In our recent radio conversation with long-time Ufologist Don Ecker, Don asked me why we started this website. I figured this question may come up, because I get asked it often whenever I introduce someone to our site. We don’t quite fit into the “mold.” We are not a believer forum – we require all claims are backed by solid, verifiable evidence. However, we are not a skeptics forum, because we discuss many issues that knee-jerk skeptics avoid such as spirituality, cryptozoology and many other topics that the “mainstream” might automatically consider “weird.”

Here’ the thing – these topics aren’t actually “weird,” it’s just that so many people that are drawn to these topics are also mentally unstable. This makes it difficult for sane people, like you, to find some respectable and “normal” place to try to find the answers.

The answer that I gave Don surprised him, I think. I quoted him. The quote came from an essay he wrote in 2007, published by Kevin Randle, titled Don Ecker Quits Ufology. In the essay, the most powerful paragraphs expresses the frustration and exhaustion that many respectable researchers and writers throughout Ufology are feeling:

“I’m tired of the media that is blinded by their prejudice about UFOs, their snide and condescending remarks about something that quite frankly they know nothing about. I’m tired of people claiming to be researchers that refuse to accept the truth about something regardless of how many times it jumps up and bites them in the ass.

I’m tired of government agencies that continuously lie about a subject that has shown to be something real and even possibly affect our national security… and getting away with it for over 60 years. I’m tired of believers that become upset when their fuzzy illogic is shown to be as full of holes as Swiss Cheese. I’m tired of frauds and clowns in this field that are shown to be frauds and clowns and yet still are treated like they are stars with something important to say. I suppose you could just say I’m tired of all of it.”

Many of you reading this are probably nodding your heads in agreement. The hoaxes and con games from so many of those mentally unstable individuals lead to a phenomenon known as disinformation overload. Now, overwhelmingly the evidence shows that most of that disinformation comes from con artists who are simply using the field as a platform to gain notoriety or fame, even if on a small scale and within a fringe community.

Oddly, some of the hoaxes also seem to involved small private groups of people as well – people who tend to gravitate to and conduct scientific research on fringe topics. They try to remain under the radar in their efforts – but every now and then you can get a glimpse of one of them on the wings of many of these false stories.

The Creation of Cults

In his examination of the field of Ufology, Jacques Vallee often touches upon this strange phenomenon – that of small groups of individuals forming a cohesive group that shares a collective belief system regarding the phenomenon. Vallee thoroughly explored the question, why do people join cults… For the cohesive group, the belief system doesn’t need to be based in any physical reality or upon any real evidence – it just needs to somehow explain the phenomenon that they’ve all experienced.

Vallee said it best when he wrote in his 1989 book Dimensions:

“I think the stage is set for the appearance of new faiths, centered on the UFO belief. To a greater degree than all phenomena modern science is confronting, the UFO can inspire awe, the sense of the smallness of man, and an idea of the possiblity of contact with the cosmic. The religions we have briefly surveyed began with the miraculous experiences of one person, but to-day there are thousands for whom the belief in otherworldly contact is based on intimate conviction, drawn from what they regard as personal contact with UFOs and their occupants.” (page 192).

This collective belief system makes these groups feel normal, because they share those beliefs. These ideas may include that UFO sightings are caused by extra-terrestrials from other planets, that Intelligence communities across the world have an elaborate system of cover-up of alien visitations, or that aliens are channeling important messages for humanity through contactees or “mediums.”

Whenever a piece of evidence surfaces that runs counter to this group’s “belief-system,” the reaction from cult-members is rather astonishing. Normally kind and mature adults will resort to name-calling. Ordinarily law-abiding citizens will attempt to terrorize or slander anyone involved in revealing that truth.

In Messengers of Deception (a book I will be reviewing here at RU this month), Vallee describes this best:

“Human beings are under the control of a strange force that bends them in absurd ways, forcing them to play a role in a bizarre game of deception.” (p. 20)

Can You Find Answers Within Ufology?

So, why do people join cults? They do so for the very reason you, yourself are reading this blog entry. In fact, you are a perfect candidate for these cults. You have questions about a strange experience you’ve had that feels very real to you. You would like answers that you can’t get from mainstream sources that scorn you for your experiences, or treat you as though you’re crazy. You are certain that you aren’t having delusional visions or any other symptoms of mental illness – so where do you turn?

Well – you would typically end up where the “sick” people (who are actually having delusional visions) end up, on UFO forums that are essentially UFO cults.  You may find a welcoming community that acknowledges your experiences and make you feel as though they are “normal.”  You find a home. This is why people join cults – because they do not realize they’re joining a “cult.”

So what’s the test – how do you know if you’re joining up with a cult community? Well, the best approach I can think of to test a UFO community is to see if they adhere to the sort of “litmus test” that Vallee applied to UFO sightings called the “SVP” code. If the community follows this behavior upon any new report or claim turning up – then you’ve found a winner that you should join – one that is not a UFO cult.

  • Members study the reliability of the source of the story. An anonymous source isn’t given much credit. A person with a known criminal record is given even less. The community automatically filters out stories from such sources.
  • Researchers put “boots on the ground.” Researchers pick up the phone to call sources or visit witnesses and interview them to verify potentially valid claims.
  • Third, do members of the community first try to explain the story or claim with common sense? Do they initially explore natural phenomenon or conventional environmental factors that could explain the phenomena? This behavior isn’t skepticism, it is a healthy way to identify potentially valid paranormal phenomenon through the process of elimination.

All three of these factors were listed in Vallee’s model, rated from 0 to 4.  A “444″ is the gold standard of a truly “impressive” event, or in the case of UFO’s – a sighting that simply can not be explained away.

So, why do people join cults? Because they are looking for answers. If the group that you are considering joining handles new stories or events in the manner described above – that’s the community that you want to join. That’s the community that will help you find the truth, and you don’t have to worry that you may be inadvertently stepping into a UFO cult community.

Lars Hansson Returns…

If you like ground-breaking hoax busting, then you’ve probably heard of Lars C. Hansson, an investigative reporter who, in 1991, produced an over 300 page affidavit completely exposing John Lear and Bill Cooper as complete frauds.

Lars Hansson was a noted researcher and writer into political and U.S. intelligence conspiracy theories, potential cover-ups and of course cleaning up Ufology B.S. He published, “UFO’s, Aliens and “Ex”-intelligence Agents: The Inside Story of John Lear and Bill Cooper-Who’s Fooling Whom”, and then about 15 years ago, Lars simply fell completely and totally off the radar.

Some suspected that he was dead – that finally his earth-shattering research and hoax-busting caught up with him. That is not the case – and tonight at 10:00 PM Pacific, you can hear from Lars Hansson himself as he talks with our very good friend and fellow investigative researcher, Don Ecker – the host of the Dark Matters radio show.

Don Ecker writes in the RU Forums:

“… Lars dropped off the radar, seemingly forever, over 15 years ago. I knew him very well back in the early 90′s and some of the stories we shared included but were not limited to …. John Lear, Bill Cooper, Bob Lazar, Gordon Novel, Col. Bo Gritz, and too many others than to name now.

There were even those who believed he was dead because of the book he wrote titled; “UFO’s, Aliens and “Ex”-intelligence Agents: The Inside Story of John Lear and Bill Cooper-Who’s Fooling Whom” (for more on that and to read what is online go to http://www.ufomind.com/area51/people/lear/hansson.html)

A short while ago he contacted me out of the blue and after we spent hours on the telephone catching up, he agreed to come on Dark Matters Radio tonight (June 17th) for the first in a series of shows to not only catch up but find out what he was been doing for the last 15 years.”

This is a remarkable story and should make for a fascinating radio show, as another one of Ufology’s greatest hoax-busters rises up and reports that he is, in fact, very much alive and well. You can even call in at 1-818-381-4094 during the show and ask Lars a question yourself.

Listen to the show tonight at 10pm (Pacific time) on CyberstationUSA (click on “Listen Live”).

After the show, visit Don in the forums and let him know what you thought about the show!

Don Ecker Interviews Stephen Broadbent on Dark Matters Radio

After RealityUncovered released the story about “Source A” and his true identity, the response throughout the Ufology community has, excluding the Exopolitics crowd, been very positive.

Those revelations about Source A continue to reverberate throughout the Ufology community this week, as discussions take place on the many Ufology forums and blogs regarding Richard Theilmann and the Pickering Brothers.

Today, well-known Ufologist Don Ecker contacted us for an interview with RU’s Stephen Broadbent to discuss this hoax as well as the other stories RU has published since its founding.

The radio interview will be aired tonight at 10pm Pacific Time, 1am Eastern Time. You can listen to the live show at CyberstationUSA, or download the show from the archive at Dark Matters Radio.

About Don Ecker

For anyone familiar with the field of Ufology, Don Ecker is a well known figure, and we were very pleased to have this opportunity for a dialog with such an established figure in the field. Don Ecker served as the Director of Research for UFO Magazine for more than 20 years.

In terms of military background, Richard, Clay and Shawn could learn a thing or two from reviewing Don’s past. This is a man with a real military background. Don enlisted in the army in 1969 and served in the top-secret Army Security Agency (the military branch of the NSA) during the Vietnam War. Don served at Okinawa and served in Vietnam at Camp A-4 in Phu Bai in 1971, right on the DMZ. Don was injured during the 1972 “Easter Offensive,” receiving a Purple Heart, and was eventually honorably discharged from service.

In this author’s humble opinion, there is no one better suited to interview RU’s Stephen Broadbent than Don Ecker

Don’s Past UFO Research Aligns with RU’s Mission

In this interview, Don and Steve immediately strike up a positive camaraderie. This could be because both Don and Steve share a military background. Or, just as likely, it could be because they share a common research style – open minded, yet skeptical and fair.

In the early 1980′s, during his work as a police criminal investigator, Don investigated cattle mutilation cases, which eventually led to his life-long interest in various legends and myths.

Don is an established international Ufology expert, making appearances at UFO conferences across the world. He has hosted numerous radio programs and eventually established Dark Matters on Reality Radio Network with film star Dwight Schultz (The A-Team and Star Trek). Don Ecker has been featured on the History channel, the Discovery channel and Coast to Coast AM, to name a few.

Interview Topics

In tonight’s interview, Don and Steve’s discussion is an in-depth talk about the Source A expose, developed from the original, amazing investigative efforts of researchers Andrew and John and then developed and published as a collaborative effort between Amkon and RealityUncovered.

After striking up an interesting discussion, the topics in this radio show also branch out into other areas as well, including RU’s past Serpo investigations, the Phoenix Lights, the Kennedy Assasination and even 9-11.

So listen to the radio show live tonight at CyberstationUSA. Or, if you miss it, make sure to check it out at the archives at Dark Matters Radio
