Actual Recording of Astronaut UFO Encounter

Actual Recording of Astronaut UFO Encounter
readers may remember a few months back when we showed you some alleged astronaut moon-landing transcripts that included this line: "…there were other spaceships. They're lined up on the other side of the crater." As we said, that transcript is purely alleged as we only have it in written form. Recently, however, our crack h-files investigative team has stumbled upon an actual recording of a 1989 astronaut encounter.

On March 13th, 1989, Donald Ratsch (an American member of a radio club that monitors all of NASA's space travel transmissions) was recording communications from the shuttle Discovery. He picked the right time to record, because he got this astronaut transmission: "Houston this is Discovery, we still have the Alien spacecraft under observance."

This is a question from someone who knows little to nothing about amateur radio, so....

Was it really possible to intercept and record NASA transmissions with amateur radio equipment? I always assumed the transmissions weren't simple straight radio transmissions, but encrypted in some way?

It isn't that preposterous.. Considering that NASA is supposed to be a civilian agency - all their civilian data is supposed to be in the public domain. Plus (IMO) NASA wants every ounce of PR and goodwill they can get.

Some info:

The easiest way which anyone with HF receiving equipment can receive the shuttle is by tuning into WA3NAN, this is the Goddard Space Center Amateur Radio Club. WA3NAN is the club station which is operated from the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. This station rebroadcasts Shuttle communications during Shuttle missions.

Goddard Amateur Radio Club Shuttle Retransmission FAQ - Google Cache
Kindled by a desire to spread the excitement of America's space program and of the Space Shuttle in particular, members of the Goddard Amateur Radio Club (WA3NAN) and the Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) devised a plan to re-transmit live, air-to-ground audio over amateur frequencies. {snip}
n 1990, ARRL sought permission from NASA, on behalf of radio amateurs, to retransmit shuttle communications. The response from NASA's Office of Public Affairs encouraged such retransmissions, and indicated that the audio is public domain.

Presumably, if a transmission has to do with a classified mission, that would not be over an open channel.

There's a gentleman in South Australia who regularly listens in on NASA, ISS and Shuttle transmissions.
Sorry can't recall his name but i remember a story on one of the news channels.
Plenty of amateur sites that claim to listen in.

Ahhh, found it. :)

I recall chatting about this on ATS a few years ago. Ya, here it is:

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread190229/pg1

right around the time the OP started this thread.

running the clip through some filters what I heard then was "orbiting spacecraft" not "alien spacecraft"... which isn't quite as shocking but still raised a few questions for me:

I was under the impression that they used the term 'vehicle' for devices which carry personnel (space vehicle, launch vehicle, recovery vehicle etc.) and I was under the impression that we are pretty much aware of all of the junk that is in orbit around this planet so it shouldn't have been that big of a deal (but apparently it was)

the whole event is a little fishy, but I have a hard time with the 'alien' word...

Here's the sound byte in mp3 format for folks who want to 'play' with it, ripped from the Real Player file with Audacity:

the sentence:
http://www.torbtown.com/discovery.mp3

the word:
http://www.torbtown.com/discoverclip.mp3

the word tweeked:
http://www.torbtown.com/discoverytweek.mp3

I don't hear a long A sound like Alien, I get more of an AH or OH sound, and in the tweek version I don't get an L sound at all but more of B... AH BEE IN oHr Bee iN

I get the 'feeling' the sentence was 'orbiting spacecraft'

Regardless, it's still kind of weird, the hype and cover up around it makes it weirder. (I'm sorry, the astronauts were Joking? Gee, that's sure is sweet of them. So when they say "uh, Huston, we have a problem" that's a joke too, hmm? And if they should say "Houston, China just launched a fleet of ICBMs and they are headed your way, been nice knowing you." that will be treated as joke too, I'm sure.)

When are folks gonna learn that covering up, hiding, or making light of a situation is Not the way to cover up, hide, or make the situation go away? *laughs*

What’s this doing in the "Best Evidence" forum? Looks like I need to take some time and see what else is in there... :)

Ratcsh UFO retraction (James Oberg)

Here's Ratsch's retraction message (his current email address is
sts48@home.com):

Date: Thu, 14 Mar 1996 18:51:37 -0800
From: sts48@ix.netcom.com (Donald Ratsch)
Subject: Re: NASA WAV file
To: bdzeiler@students.wisc.edu (Brian Zeiler)

Brian, yes I have the full story on that. The details was carried on
the July 1989 issue of the MUFON Journal. Briefly I recorded some of
the radio broadcast via my audio scanner from the space shuttle
Discovery through WA3NAN, the club station of the Goddard Amateur Radio
Club at Greenbelt, Md, transmitting on 147.450 MHZ. It is a
retransmission from the NASA Select original. I heard what I thought
was one of the male astronauts saying, "Houston, Discovery, we still
have the alien spacecraft under observance". Well I was pretty excited
and got in touch with Walt Andrus of MUFON and Vince Dipietro (Mars
Face Fame) who is employed at Goddard Space Flight Center who I later
handed over the tape to have a voice print analysis performed to
compare the target voice to the astronauts' voices that were aboard
during that mission. The result of the analysis showed that a few
positive hits on Astronaut Bagian (the physician on board) but not
enough hits to say he was the one who said the target words. So the
results were inconclusive. Later a check showed there was no target
voice on the original NASA Select audio.

About a year after that, I was again monitoring the audio from another NASA
mission via my scanner and I heard that voice again, saying something similar
to the target voice a year earlier. However on this mission, all the
astronauts were different compared to the other one. This led me to conclude
that unfortunately, the target voice was a hoax probably from an amateur
radio operator.
Jim Oberg emailed me some time ago and asked me about
that case and I told him what I just told you.

Likely story.

The relevant audio clip was released to the UFO community by Donald Ratsch (see the July 1989 issue of the MUFON Journal). Ratsch stated that he recorded the relevant audio via his audio scanner "from the space shuttle Discovery through WA3NAN, the club station of the Goddard Amateur Radio Club at Greenbelt, Md, transmitting on 147.450 MHZ".

Ratsch has subsequently stated that he heard the same voice saying something similar a year later (when the shuttle crew was different).

Thus, Ratsch concluded that "the target voice was a hoax probably from an amateur radio operator".

In other words, the person that recorded the audio clip does NOT believe that it was the voice of an astronaut or a transmission from a shuttle mission. Instead, he believes that it is a hoax.

See, for example, James Oberg's email on Updates at the link below (for which a subscription is now required):

This audio clip regularly crops up on ATS and other forums. Relevant threads on ATS alone include:
