China and Spies

Postby Zep Tepi » Mon Feb 11, 2008 7:50 pm

This is an interesting Breaking News story from the Sky News website.

Sky News wrote:A former Boeing engineer has been charged with stealing Space Shuttle secrets for China.
He is one of four people arrested in the US today on suspicion of spying for China.

The US Justice Department described it as a "serious breach of national security" and said it showed China's spying efforts "are approaching Cold War levels".

The engineer was held in Orange County, California, on allegations he supplied trade secrets from several aerospace programmes, including the Space Shuttle.

In a second espionage case, two men and a woman - including a US Defense Department official - are alleged to have passed classified US government documents to China.

They were named as Tai Shen Kuo, 58, and Yu Xin Kang, 33, both from New Orleans, Louisiana, and Gregg Bergersen, 51, of Alexandria, Virginia.

The first two have been charged with "conspiracy to disclose national defence information to a foreign government". The maximum penalty is life behind bars.

Bergersen, a weapons systems policy analyst, is accused of "conspiracy to disclose national defence information to persons not entitled to receive it".

This charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Bergersen and Kuo are due to appear in federal court in Alexandria later today. Kang will appear before a federal court in New Orleans.

Assistant Attorney General Wainstein said: "Today's prosecution demonstrates that foreign spying remains a serious threat in the post-Cold War world."

US Attorney Chuck Rosenberg added: "Those who compromise classified national security information betray the enormous responsibility and trust placed in them by our government and the American people."

According to court documents, the charges relate to a two-year period between January 2006 and February 2008.

Imagine the furore that would be caused if any of the "Official" UFO releases that we have seen over the years were leaks of actual top secret government information? Yeah, that's what I thought too... ;)

Cheers,
Zep

What not a lot of people know about is that, at this moment, a movement to perform background checks on many NASA employees is held-up in our courts. Specifically, the primadonnas at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory up the street from me in Pasadena are dercying their "civil rights being trampled upon." But this article (thanks Steve!) makes it abundantly clear how the competitive advantages of our society (both military AND civilian) can be compromised by people without any scruples.

There are quite a few foreign nationals who work at NASA JPL. And what they do not understand is that they work AT THE PLEASURE OF THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER! That means their privacy is subject to the security needs of the people who pay their salaries. End of story! If you are not willing to submit to a background check to see if you can be trusted, then AFAIAC your position will be vacated and someone who IS willing to undergo that check will then be able to apply for and secure your cushy (taxpayer-funded) job.
