Top Ten Myths of Popular Psychology

Not sure where to put this but I would be interested in hearing other people’s thoughts on this from the latest issue of eSkeptic…

Top Ten Myths of Popular Psychology
http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/10-09-01/#feature

Myth #1: We Only Use 10% of our Brains

Some days I would be lucky to be using that much.

Myth #2: It’s Better to Express Anger Than to Hold it in

!@#$% There, I feel better now.

Myth #3: Low Self-Esteem is a Major Cause of Psychological Problems

I’m skeptical of this… maybe not “psychological problems” as defined in the DSM but definitely a major cause of some unhealthy behaviors.

Myth #4: Human Memory Works like a Video Camera

Can you run that past me again?

Myth #5: Hypnosis is a Unique “Trance” State Differing in Kind from Wakefulness

“You are getting very sleepy…”

Myth #6: The Polygraph Test is an Accurate Means of Detecting Lies

Nor is it an accurate means of detecting truth but tell that to the examinee squirming in the hot seat.

Myth #7: Opposites Attract

I’m skeptical of this... my wife is definitely my better half.

Myth #8: People with Schizophrenia Have Multiple Personalities

Me, myself, and I are confused.

Myth #9: Full Moons Cause Crimes and Craziness

Lunatics are crazy all the time.

Myth #10: A Large Proportion of Criminals Successfully Use the Insanity Defense

However their lawyers still get paid.

As far as #2 I think there's sometimes good cause to hold it in but on the other hand I feel so much better when I beat someone to a bloody pulp after they piss me off.

Well, I was going to say...

"Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they pissed me off."

But, after reading this thread at JREF...

I probably shouldn't be skeptical of Myth #2.

I believe the bigger myth is that the DSM is based on any sort of science or medicine.
