What happened to "Project Djedi"?

Postby suspicioso » Mon May 02, 2011 11:44 pm

Last heard of in October 2010, "Project Djedi" was a collaboration between Zawi Hawass' team in Egypt and Leeds University to send a robot into the shafts in the Queen's Chamber of the Great Pyramid, and drill through the doors to see what was behind it:

There was also a little bit of press information about the project:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scien ... 46506.html

However, Dr. Richardson's personal site and department site don't mention this project at all.

I can imagine all kinds of scenarios that might put things on hold - funding issues, problems with travel around the time of the popular revolt in January - but it seems a bit odd that there is absolutely no information post the press releases back in October 2010, and nothing at all at Leeds.

Anyone know anything more?

Hey Sus, long time no see!

There is some good information in an ATS thread (I know, I know!) which sheds some light on the issue. Essentially, the people behind the project are not releasing any information until it has gone through the correct (i.e. scientific) channels.

Cheers,
Steve

Cheers, Zep - that makes sense.

I can also see how this process would have been delayed by recent events in Egypt, and Hawass's own troubles.

Still, even just some updates on the engineering of the robot would have been nice...

I agree, I would love to learn more about the relatively new (I think?) and innovative use of this kind of technology in exploring sites like this. I hope there's something new on this released sooner rather than later.

I love this:

This gave researchers a clear view into the chamber beyond. It was at that time that the micro snake camera sent back images of 4,500-year-old markings.

Looks like they keep finding what are essentially "carpenter's marks"....given, the Egyptian carpenters had some impressive mathematical skill. :-)
