Russians pulling a fast one ?

Postby Chorlton » Mon Aug 18, 2008 9:41 am

Looking at videos of the Russian invasion of Georgia last week I was very surprised at the very old equipment they were using. Old tanks, APC's and light tanks. Some of that stuff looked ancient and very dated.
Or was it just a ploy by the Russians to fool the west into thinking thats all they have?
I know their latest fighter plane is supposed to be pretty cool, but the Georgians even managed to shoot a few of those down with pretty basic gear.
Are they just wheeling their old stuff out as a ploy?
I have become that which I always despised and feared........Old !

My greatest wish, would be to own my own scrapyard.

Remember Grozny - Russia sent in conscripted interior ministry troops with outdated gear in the first instance, and only committed their better-equipped veteran army units much, much later after suffering heavy casualties. (Much to the frustration of some Russian commanders on the ground).

The Russians only prevailed against the comparatively tiny size of the Georgian military thanks to vastly superior numbers. Even so, the russkies have suffered way more losses than they probably expected. It was reported that many of the Russian tanks had broken down on the way into Georgia and they were plagued by numerous issues. The Georgians also succeeded in shooting down a number of their planes, including an ancient TU-22 Long Range bomber.

This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I was in the army during the cold war and the only thing that made the Soviets a threat was the fact they had a nuclear button. Against well-trained and well-equiped conventional forces, they wouldn't stand a chance. Aside from a few specialist units, the majority of the Russian army are a joke.

The bear has certainly growled, but it hasn't impressed this observer ;)

Cheers,
Steve
