Thought Experiment

Postby longhaircowboy » Wed Jul 29, 2009 10:02 pm

Here's a question for consideration:
What if one day a freak solar activity sterilized the entire population on the side of earth facing the sun?
What would be the social, economic, and religious consequences?
Now put on those thinking caps.

Well I don't know about any of the things you requested impact on, but I can tell you this:

Al Gore and his minions would claim the whole event was caused by global warming! ;)

What makes you think the government would tell you and it hasn’t happened before?

Wait, you said thinking not tinfoil cap…

OK, which side of the Earth?

Depends on whether or not it's the good one…

Social: On the side of the world where there's no further reproduction, society would completely break down in a decade or two. The effects would be gradual, because at first no one would immediately notice what social changes are about to occur - but after a decade and a sudden reduction in population is noticed (as the oldest and sickest die off), social panic would really start to set in. The civilizations would contemplate the future of the world without those particular races and/or societies. On the flip side - if part of the world is left that *can* reproduce, as those large regions of the world start to open up and land/property becomes available at very low cost - people from other non-sterile regions would move in and begin to repopulate that area of the world. In the end - probably the social effects would be severe, but short-lived and self-healing (thanks to the fact that there's still an earth population that can reproduce).

Economic: Again - effects would probably be severe for the first few decades until new populations move in and start to increase the population again. Many areas would likely fall into severe economic decline, and large communities would eventually become "ghost towns" - but again, in time those areas would be repopulated due to the fact that the earth's population multiplies so rapidly, and because the low cost of property in these areas would be a attraction to the non-sterile population... So - economic effects would be severe but short-lived.

Religious: These effects would be most immediate and most severe as armageddon/end-of-the-world cults would spring up throughout the affected areas and feed off of the fear and anxiety of dying races and dying populations.

Interesting scenario to consider LHC. It would make a great novel. :)

Ok lets suppose it occured on the side that includes the US of A. Would it not be a stretch to say that the working population would be supplanted by people of another culture thereby completely rearranging the cultural setup here. After a couple of generations America might just become another country. As workers who can reproduce and keep the workforce growing supplant the previous inhabitants so too would their culture begin to permeate the land. If this work force had a different societal caste that would become the norm as well.
All of the things Ryan suggests would appear to be highly likely. But what would be some of the other implications of this vast shift in the global makeup?
And yes I am considering this scenario for a possible book or movie(I have a friend in HWood looking for ideas).

OK cool, now that I’ve had some time to think about this, coming soon to a theater near you…

[saw District 9 this weekend, great flick, terrible ending]

Godzilla’s Revenge

Continuing in their millenniums old policy of isolationism, China, having wisely recognized the destabilizing nature of the loss of the world’s greatest superpower, launches a preemptive nuclear strike against the USA’s technological and nuclear assets in order to prevent them from being exploited by other, more “ambitious” regimes.

Radioactive contamination of North America, combined with the previous sterilization of all life in the Western Hemisphere, renders it a permanent uninhabitable wasteland.

The Former Soviet Union, having the expansionist desires of the remaining Communist hardliners reawakened by the wholesale elimination of their former rival, launches a surprise nuclear strike against the new defacto superpower, China, before they have a chance to rebuild their nuclear arsenal.

However, Soviet intelligence has seriously underestimated China’s reserve stockpiles and early detection capabilities resulting in the first realization of the consequences of MAD. China and Russia are instantly wiped off the map.

Not surprisingly, Israel and Iran soon suffer the same fate, hereafter refereed to as Armageddon Lite.

As a result, the nuclear powers of Europe combine to form a new superpower, Europa, to thwart the threat of the newly formed Middle Eastern superpower, Syriastan, hell bent on realizing a millenniums old dream of eliminating the last remnants of Christianity from the face of the Earth.

They succeed, however, thanks to MAD, they also manage to 86 the last remnants of Islam in the process.

The upper half of the Eastern Hemisphere is now a nuclear wasteland and what’s left of Africa and other assorted third world nations in the Southern Hemisphere rapidly starve, unable to sustain their populations in isolation due to dwindling finite resources and undeveloped technological abilities. The few primitive cannibalistic tribes that remain eventually suffer from radiation poisoning from the North and die out.

Ironically, the tiny island of Japan, survivors of the first nuclear strike in history, go on to rule the world happily ever after by conquering Australia, the last remaining uncontaminated continent on Earth…

The End.

[Until… Gamera!!!]

That's good AD. I got a friend in Htown I forwarded that to. Just saw a program last nite called "Aftermath". They showed what would happen without us humans around. Quite the eye opener.
