Howdy-doody

Postby Smersh » Wed Jun 08, 2011 1:02 am

Nice to have finally got over here! So hi to all my friends here who already know me and hi to new friends yet to be made. 8)

My interests cover quite a lot of stuff really and I put some of em in my profile (but I forgot to add music  so I'll go and do that in a mo ... Led Zeppelin, Gilbert & Sullivan, The Members, Motown, Johann Strauss, "Pretty Vacant" by The Sex Pistols, John Cooper Clarke, Shirley Bassey, The Who, Sinatra, Elvis (both of em) Pink Floyd, dah-de-dah-de-dah-de-dah-de-dah ... can you give me another 94 pages for this please. )

Ok then, about Ufology - my belief is that 99.9% of UFO sighting reports, Youtube videos etc are complete and utter nonsense and we need to sort the wheat from the chaff, so we are then left with the really interesting stuff. As I understand it, many here share a similar view, which is why I've been keen to join.

So, it's "Once more unto the breach, dear friends" (Or something like that anyway!)

Welcome Smersh! I agree with you on your percentages by the way. It's those 1% of interesting cases that cause so many of the debates in Ufology though. :-)

Thanks for jumping in, it's great to have you here.

Thanks very much for the welcome Ryan.

Yes I agree that the tiny percentage of UFO reports that cannot satisfactorily be explained create a lot of debate and I guess it's not surprising really, because to arrive at the conclusion that something really cannot be explained usually requires much debate in the first place. :)

Thanks Steve, hopefully I can gradually work myself into the topics and try to make a meaningful contribution. I'm mostly trying to catch up first with what's been posted already in various threads.

Welcome to RU Smersh…

Well, I suppose this thread could probably stand some more input…

The 23 Greatest Sci-Fi Songs of All Time

It’s a start anyway. :)

.1%, 1%, 10% or whatever figure anyone comes up with, including zero, I still find 100% of it interesting.

Hi Tom and thanks for the welcome. I just had a quick look in that thread and will try to think of something to post, related to sci-fi. I was wondering where you guys put yer Youboob musak vids!

Btw, you don't know a guy screenname JimGlenn who used to post over on the Space.com forum before it went defunct do you? It's just that your post just after mine in the 2012/Rapture blah blah thread was just the sort of thing he used to post. In fact, I was wondering for a while if you were he.

No, but now I'm curious who's been copying me... :)

I wonder what happened to the Space.com forums? I must confess I didn’t follow it all that closely (didn’t James Oberg used to post there?) and I can't remember the last time I read any of the news articles there. They used to have some of the best coverage available. All I could find was this thread on BAUT…

http://www.bautforum.com/showthread.php ... -Space.com

I didn’t realize the forums had been around that long, bummer.

I don't recall James Oberg ever posting there Tom, but he might have done, not sure. I've seen him posting at ATS sometimes though (I'm not a member at ATS but just "lurk" and read stuff.) Oh and thanks for the link to the BAUT thread, I hadn't seen that yet.

As for the SDC (Space.com) forums, they got hacked into, as did the entire site. I just happened to visit there shortly after the hack occured and before any of the management knew about it. (It happened on a weekend.) I found that every single post in every thread (many thousands of posts - in fact EVERY post in existence going back to the very earliest ones) had been edited somehow to be replaced with a spam viagra advert.

The ENTIRE site, including the main page with the articles AND Live Science and Newsarama etc had all been hacked. I heard from one of the mods who's a friend, that the source code had been compromised and that it was them who informed the bosses of the hack, otherwise they might not have found out until the following Monday. The main parts of the site were all restored within a few days but so far, the fora have not returned.

Quite a few of the old members from there now post over at The Spaceport but the SDC forums haven't been openly discussed on that board, because the owners have a rule that there can be no discussion about other boards.

Thanks Smersh, I know Jim posts at ATS so I’m probably thinking of some other forum.

Man, what a nightmare at SDC. Sounds like maybe whatever backup strategy they relied on failed for some reason. I think BAUT experienced something similar or was about to around the same timeframe. They were able to recover from it in fairly short order but it wasn’t without a lot of work and some data loss from what I gathered.

Anyway, appreciate the inside scoop. That should definitely serve as a warning to everyone…

Aye it does look like it. SDC and all it's related sites like Live Science etc had been sold by Imaginova to Tech Media Network a few months before the hack, although I don't know it that's related to what happened.

I'm not sure they had a backup strategy at all because they seem too embarrassed to discuss it on their Facebook / Twitter etc. If anybody asks a question about it, it gets ignored. Quite astonishing really for a site the size of that if that's the case - I mean, regular backups are so important aren't they? Over on my site we backup the fora every 24 hours.
